Toyota started producing automobiles in 1933, originally sold under the Toyoda name, then from 1937 as the Toyota Motor Company.
The Supra was derived from the Celica, originally called the Celica XX in Japan, the first four generations got a 6 cyl engine (standard Celicas were 4 cyl)
The Supra was built from 1978-2002, from 1986 the Celica name was dropped, now just Toyota Supra.
The first generation of the Supra was based largely upon the Toyota Celica liftback, but was longer by 129.5 mm. The doors and rear section were shared with the Celica but the front panels were elongated to accommodate the 6 cyl instead of the Celica's 4 cyl engine. Toyota's original plan for the Supra was to make it a competitor to the very popular Datsun Z-car.
In 1979 the rear view mirrors were redesigned and alloy wheels replaced steel
In 1980 engine displacement was increased to 2759cc (before was 2563cc)
