The first Mazda vehicle, a three wheel truck, was introduced in 1931. the first car, in 1960. Rotary engine development began at Mazda in 1961, The first Rotary powered car was the 1967 Cosmo Sport.
The Cosmo name was revived in 1975, with this, the CD series, it had a strong American flavor, its two-door coupe styling and vertically-lined radiator grille were unconventional for a Japanese car. The Rotary powered car was sold in Japan as the Cosmo AP and internationally as the Mazda RX-5. The piston engine versions were the Cosmo 1800 and Cosmos 2000. It was Mazda luxury car, available as a notchback coupe, with leather covered landau roof, which included an 'opera' window or the more popular fastback. It was Mazda's largest rotary-powered coupe, available with the 1146cc 12A or 1308cc 13B engines
