Unless you're a die-hard motorsport fan, you might think that Dallara is the latest in the line of low-volume boutique sports car manufacturers. But there's a lot more to this Italian mark than meets the eye! Tiff Needell takes a look at the man and the brand, Gian Paolo Dallara, an engineer, who worked for the likes of Ferrari, and Maserati and Lamborghini. In 1972 set up his own company and actually made his very first little racing car, but he soon got distracted by manufacturers who wanted him to engineer and build their racing cars, and he created this Group VI Lancia LC1 sports car and went on to create Lancia's LC2 Group C car. Dallara also built Ferrari's 333 SP sports car, and Audi's Le Mans-winning R8. But Dallara's talents weren't just confined to sports cars. He built the Scuderia Italian Grand Prix car that took two podium finishes in the late 80s, early 90s. He built cars that won the Indianapolis 500. He now builds all the Indy cars, he builds all the Formula 2 cars, all the Formula 3 cars, also build the Haas Grand Prix cars, and he's even involved in Formula E.
