| Description | Originally the Swallow Sidecar Company (founded in 1922) and then in 1934 the name changed to S.S.Cars, the company was renamed Jaguar Cars in 1945. Bought Daimler in 1960. Daimler became an upscale trim level for Jaguar. Jaguar merged with BMC in 1966 and then with Leyland in 1968. The Jaguar E-Type (XK-E) a sports car, replacing the XK150, manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1974. Available in Fixed head coupe and Roadster. In 1966 a 2+2 version of the coupe was added (9 inches longer) The Jaguar E Type's combination of beauty, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. The Series I was built from 1961-68 The Series II E Type was built from 1969-71 with a larger mouth grille, larger indicators were below rather than above the bumpers and the rear bumper now wrapped around. The Series III was introduced in 1971, easily identifiable by the large cross-slatted front grille and flared wheel arches. The Series III got the new 272hp 5.3 litre V12 engine with 4 Zenith carburettors, originally developed for the 24 hour of Le Mans' a badge on the rear that proclaims it to be a V12. (A few early Series IIIs were built with the 6 cyl) The short wheelbase FHC body style was discontinued, with the Series 3 available only as a convertible and 2+2 coupé. |
