| Description | The Triumph name started in 1886 selling imported bicycles, they started producing motorcycles in 1902 and motor cars in 1920. Purchased by the Standard Motor Company in 1945, and from 1959 was known as Standard Triumph. Purchased by Leyland Motors in 1960, which became British Leyland in 1968. The Triumph Spitfire was a sports car based on the Triumph Herald, using the Heralds 1147cc engine and running gear (the later GT6 was a 6 cyl version, based on the Triumph Vitesse) The first Spitfire, the Mk I was built from 1962-64. The Mk II 1965-67 got more power and a new grille; (still 1147cc) The Mk III 1967-70; a facelift, the bumper was raised; (now 1296cc from Herald 13/60) Mk IV; 1970-74; rear end cut off, like Stag, recessed door handles (1296cc) The last Spitfire was the 1500; 1974-81 impact absorbing bumpers, new engine (1493cc) |
