1992 Honda Civic Ferio SiR sedan (modified)- Photographed in Cyberjaya, Malaysia Assembly : ??? Notes : Alloy rims, front turn signal lamps, rear muffler and rear Honda badge is non-standard. Bodykit possibly non-standard, and ride height may have been reduced. Trim level (SiR) may be incorrect. Honda's Civic nameplate is known the world over. Whoever you are, however old you may be and wherever you live on Earth, chances are you've seen or heard of the Civic. The Toyota Corolla is the only other nameplate with a similar level of recognition and acclaim. The Civic has been with us since 1972, and nine generations have passed since then. The Civic in my photo above is from the fifth generation, and in my honest opinion, the best generation. Some Honda fanboys may disagree, and yes, the fifth gen Civic wasn't to everyone's tastes when it launched on 10 September 1991, but I still love it to bits. Allow me to explain ; The fifth gen Civic was produced in coupé, sedan / saloon and 3-door hatchback forms. There were no less than 10 engines available, namely a 1.3L unit, five 1.5L units, three 1.6L units and a rare 1.8L unit. However, the best known and best performing of the crop would be the 1.6-litre B16Ax four-cylinder DOHC naturally aspirated series, with Honda's VTEC system. VTEC, which is an acronym for Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control, is a system which boosts power and even fuel economy by innovative manipulation of the engine's mechanisms, instead of simply upping the engine size for more power, or downsizing it for fuel economy. I can't explain in detail how VTEC works, because it would take several paragraphs worth of words which may bore you, but if you're really interested, you can watch a simple animation of how VTEC works <a href="http://i.imgur.com/UP0jepU.gif" rel="noreferrer nofollow">here</a>. The VTEC engine has to be one of the fifth generation Civic's highlights. It can make 160 hp at 7,600 rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm... that's 160 hp from a four-cylinder 1.6-litre, non-turbocharged, non-supercharged and non-rotary engine ! And this was accomplished in 1991, over 23 years ago ! Then there's the looks of it... I absolutely love how it blends style and simplicity. The fifth gen Civic was designed by one Kohichi Hirata, and man did he work his magic here ! Just imagine, the fifth gen Civic was supposedly the direct competitor to the seventh gen Toyota Corolla, which looked rather bland in comparison to the sleek fifth gen Civic. It's not just the exterior that looked great either, the interior was equally impressive. The dashboard looked stylish with its 'levelled' design and flowing lines. The front seats on some trim levels had these unique, 'C-headrests' which were positively futuristic back in 1991. Honda succeeded in making such a simple, unassuming people's car look great and desirable, and I personally think that the fifth gen Civic is the best looking in the Civic lineage. I would love to own a fifth gen Civic someday, as I've always loved it since my childhood days. Unfortunately, the Civic (90s era especially) is right up there in the car modding scene, and it's almost impossible to find a clean, unmodified and well-maintained example, anywhere in the world. Malaysia is no exception, the vast majority of fifth gen Civics on the used car classifieds have been modified to varying degrees. Unsurprisingly, the one in the photograph above is too, but fortunately, the modifications aren't too significant or extreme. I'm sorry for this unusually long write up... I really do love this car... very, very much. But I know I'll never own one... it's heart-breaking really. Sigh. I LIKE : Amazing, innovative and ahead-of-its-time VTEC engines. Great looks, in and out. A people's car with hot hatch levels of power. Independent suspension front and rear. Great modding potential. Strong and lasting legacy. I DISLIKE : Not as reliable as the Toyota Corolla. Sporting credentials may be a turn-off for some. Its image has been ruined by ricers the world over.

2010 Alfa Romeo 159 2.2 JTS Selespeed- Photographed in Cyberjaya, Malaysia Assembly : Pomigliano d'Arco, Italy Anyone who thinks a car is just a box on wheels has clearly never seen or owned an Alfa Romeo. The company has proven time and time again that style is every bit as important as substance, and the 159 is no exception to the tradition. First unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, it was only in mid-2009 that Malaysia received her first units. Two models were sold here, a 2.2-litre JTS straight-four unit with the Selespeed gearbox, and a 3.2-litre JTS V6 model paired to the Qtronic transmission, which arrived later on. The Malaysian-market 159 is a CBU import from Italy and was distributed by Sime Darby Auto Italia (SDAI). Unfortunately, the 159 sold poorly here, despite its brilliant attributes and propositions. SDAI sold a mere 38 Alfa Romeos in 2012, and another 18 between January and August 2013, and in December that same year, SDAI voluntarily relinquished their distribution rights for the Alfa Romeo marque in Malaysia. SDAI still maintains a single outlet in KL to cater to existing owners. Sadly, no one has picked up the pieces since then, and the fate of Alfa Romeo in Malaysia is uncertain. This is a stark contrast to the past, when Alfa Romeos were a common sight on the roads. Even the Royal Malaysian Police once operated a fleet of Alfa Romeo Giulia and Alfetta patrol cars in the 1970s. The 159 in the photo above is an incredibly rare car in Malaysia. I was very lucky to have found this one ! It's likely that the total number of 159s on Malaysian streets number in the mere hundreds. I LIKE : Gorgeous looks. Loads of character. Brilliant engines. I DISLIKE : Reliability and refinement is still a question mark.

2005 Toyota Vios 1.5G- Photographed in Cyberjaya, Malaysia Colour : Coal Black Assembly : Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia The Toyota Vios is the best selling non-Malaysian car in Malaysia. Launched in May 2003, it was an instant hit with Malaysians who longed for a Japanese car, but couldn't afford the 6-digit price tag. From as low as RM 73,600 and no more than RM 81,900, the Vios went where no Japanese 4-door sedan had before; into the sub-80k region, a region dominated by Proton and Perodua. The affordable pricing of the Vios was made possible by the introduction of the 2003 AFTA (ASEAN Free Trade Area) agreement and an increase in local or ASEAN-sourced parts and components. UMW Toyota, the company with the rights to distribute Toyota cars in Malaysia, took advantage of the situation and promptly introduced the Vios just in time to battle Honda Malaysia's equivalent, the Honda City. Together, these two small cars ripped a massive hole in Proton's market share, where sales fell from 214,373 in 2002 to 155,420 in 2003. The prevalent logic among Malaysian consumers at that time was ''Why buy an unreliable Proton when I could get a proven Toyota for almost the same price ?''. And indeed, a top-spec Proton Waja costed around RM 70k in 2003, and while buyers of the Waja were entitled to a bigger and better equipped car, with excellent handling to boot, many Malaysians were more than willing to spend their hard earned ringgits on the reliable and premium-badged Vios (or City), even if it meant a smaller and more sedated car. For some Malaysians who endured countless hours of wasted time and money in the workshops during the 'dark era (1997 to 2006)' of unreliable Protons, the Vios (and City) was a true blessing in every sense of the word, not just for Malaysian consumers, but for Proton itself (some much needed competition !). The first generation Toyota Vios itself was a very average car to begin with, as far as global standards were concerned. The Vios was really a car built for developing countries, which explains why it was never sold or sold poorly in Western Europe, Japan and North America. Nonetheless, it was a good car for its asking price, offering much of the attributes found in the world's best selling car, the Corolla, but all in a smaller and more affordable package. The first generation Vios for the Malaysian market only came with the 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE engine, which had Toyota's renown VVT-i technology. Buyers had to get used to the 4-speed Super ECT automatic, because no manual transmission was offered for the Malaysian market. Two models were offered, the 1.5E and 1.5G, both of which were mechanically identical and differed mostly in terms of kit and luxury amenities. In December 2005, the Vios received a facelift, offering mostly cosmetic changes and improvements with a small increment in pricing. The Malaysian-market Vios was assembled in Shah Alam, in the state of Selangor, largely for domestic consumption. The first generation Vios was a major sales hit for UMW Toyota, with over 82,000 units sold between 2003 and 2007. The second gen. Vios was just as successful, if not more. However, the success of the third gen. Vios has yet to be ascertained. I LIKE : Value for money. Decent looks. Excellent engine. If it weren't for the Vios, Proton wouldn't have improved to the level it is today. I DISLIKE : Centre-mounted dash readouts are just too unconventional. Some early units had known reliability issues.

Luxgen M7- Place: Dacun, Changhua <p>The complete line-up of Luxgen, the local carmaker of Taiwan in two pictures! Well, that is apart from the Luxgen V7, a taxi version of the M7 with with high-roof. Luxgen started producing cars in 2009 with the introduction of the 7 MPV, renamed M7 after a 2014 redesign. </p> <p>The large 7 SUV (renamed U7 after after a 2014 redesign) followed in 2010, the 5 Sedan was launched in 2012 and restyled and renamed to S5 in 2015, whereas the most and only truly successful U6 hit the market in 2013. Apart from Taiwan, the cars are also locally produced in mainland China by the Dongfeng Yulon joint venture. </p> <p>Sales of the Luxgen models in Taiwan, July 2016: S3: 596 S5: 173 M7 / V7: 307 / 51 U6: 937 U7: 88 </p> Recently a new small sedan was launched: the S3. My Taiwanese friend did a short test drive with me as his co-driver. I think it doesn't come close to the S5 in the looks department, but at least it looks rather distinctive with some interesting design cues. The interior is made of good materials, apart from the centre console, with cheap plastics surrounding the modern large screen. The CVT transmission gives you the option to switch 'gears' like a manual gearbox, which is quite interesting. Furthermore, the car offers plenty of space for a small sedan. However, my friend wasn't impressed by NVH levels (lack of refinement).
