  • 2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive - The Corvette Hunter
    • Did you know that Prodrive homologated its GT racing version of the Ferrari 550 Maranello as a 550 GTO? We appreciate that comparing the car to the fabled 1960s Ferrari with which is shares its ‘Gran Turismo Omologato’ nomenclature sounds bizarre, but there are, in fact, parallels to be drawn. Both are front-engined 12-cylinder Ferraris. Both were utterly dominant in their respective (golden) eras of GT racing. Both won their class at the most famous and challenging endurance race of them all: Le Mans. Both emit soul-stirring symphonies from their exhaust pipes. And, perhaps this goes without saying, both are also exceptionally beautiful. The second 550 Maranello Prodrive constructed in 2002 and the fifth built overall, chassis number CRD05 boasts the distinction of being the most raced example of them all, with 69 starts on its competition résumé between 2003 and 2008. Highlights included GTS class victory at Petit Le Mans and three editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. From an audacious idea kindled in Frédéric Dor’s mind to reality, the story of the Prodrive-built 550 Maranello is a fairytale, studded with awe, intrigue, romance and, of course, success. Das Auto basiert auf dem Gallardo LP 570-4 Supertrofeo und besitzt wie dieser einen 5,2-Liter-V10 mit 570 PS sowie einen großen Heckflügel. Von null auf 100 km/h geht`s in 3,4 Sekunden, der Vorwärtsdrang endet erst bei Tempo 320. Der Preis dürfte deutlich jenseits der 200.000 Euro liegen.

Der Motor stammt dabei grundlegend aus den 45er-Modellen der A-Klasse, wird aber um einen elektrischen Turbolader ergänzt. Der Preis? Mindestens 65.000 Euro werden ab Mitte 2022 mit Sicherheit fällig werden, das T-Modell ist dabei natürlich entsprechend teurer. To date, it’s mainly been cars coming from Gordon Murray that have had fans: first his Brabham BT46B Formula 1 car; then his seminal McLaren F1 (did you know it had twin fans?); and most recently the T.50. But now there’s a new car that uses fans to devastating effect: the McMurtry Spéirling. It weighs 1000kg, produces 1000 electric horsepower, and the fans can spin at up to 23,000rpm to generate 2000kg of downforce from 0mph. You may know it from its record-breaking run at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it smashed a McLaren Formula 1 car’s time that had stood since 1999.
