This really is the most radical and different chapter we have ever seen in Ferrari’s history, so let us take a brief look at what has changed and what Ferrari magic has been distilled and kept. The biggest advancement here is the powertrain, now comprising of a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 and no less than 3 electric motors producing a combined output of 986bhp (1000hp). Whilst the bulk of the power comes from the V8 the electric motors contribute a healthy hot-hatched sized 217bhp. With one e-motor mounted to the engine and gearbox assisting with smoothing the torque curve and charging the battery, whilst the other two are located independently on the front two wheels making this futuristic missile of a car 4-wheel-drive. This whole system is controlled by the new eManettino haptic switch on the steering wheel opposite its analogue counterpart. The system has four modes (eDrive, Hybrid, Performance, Qualify), ranging from a silent fully electric mode good for 15 miles through to a hot-lap mode deploying the full nigh on 1000hp through all 4 wheels. Exterior styling is futuristic whilst typically Ferrari with new C-shaped Matrix LED headlights in the front and the Shut-Off Gurney rear dropping spoiler altering the cars aerodynamics as needed in the rear. Inside we are treated to an all-new interior with many more touchscreen haptic buttons and a 16” HD display instrument binnacle. Overall, the SF90 gives us a glimpse into the future, offering hypercar performance for supercar money and presenting a masterclass in the synergy between petrol and electric power. The SF90 sits in a class of one at this price point and Ferrari waits for some of its rivals to play catch up. Only 10 were ever built including the prototype, with it winning its debut Le Mans race. The F1 GTRs huge success in racing therefore means motorsport heritage is tightly linked with the Longtail name, so it has only been delegated to the highest performing road-going McLarens. The revival began with the 675LT which was the higher performing version of the 650S, then the 600LT which improves on the 570S and now, we have the 765LT. Building on the already ground-breaking 720S, the 765LT employs the same formula as the 675 and 600 Longtails. Power is raised from 710bhp of the 720S to 755bhp (765ps) of the 765LT. Weight saving, as always, is key for the Longtails. In this case, 80kg has been shaved from the 720S, which means the 765LT sits at 1,339kg in its lightest spec. A tailored suspension setup, polycarbonate glass rear-window, lighter wheels and an abundance of carbon fibre all contribute to the eye-watering performance of the newest Longtail in terms of pin-point handling and weight saving measures. 0-62mph is dealt with in a blistering 2.8 seconds, with a maximum speed of 205mph. A redesigned titanium exhaust system has been manufactured for the 765LT, where it not only serves for lightweight performance but also adds to the menacing looks of the rear with 4 separate exhaust tips, which allows the twin-scroll twin turbo V8 engine to breathe, creating a very distinctive sound. Features from the Senna have been brought over to cope with the increase in power. The brake calipers, forged pistons and stronger head gasket have been borrowed from the Senna with upgraded oil and fuelling systems, ensuring the 765LTs extreme capabilities are supported with reliability and safety. The 720S already stands out for all the right reasons. The 765LT takes these looks to the extreme with aerodynamically sculpted body panels and intakes, all maximising efficiency, reducing the drag coefficient whilst looking similar to an object from another planet. A more defined front splitter scoops and channels air to where the car most needs it. Every curve, aero flick and channel not only serves to benefit the cars looks, but also has the very important function of reducing turbulence and to dissipate heat quickly. This latest addition to the Longtail department is one that successfully completes the important job of keeping the name alive by delivering an experience that like other Longtails, is unique and a step above expectations. This is a car that must be driven in order to fully appreciate the hours of engineering that McLaren have applied to the 765LT. We see this car only building on the Longtails successful heritage. However, he felt from the beginning that the rural town in which he was born would not be adequate for the engineering career he dreamed of. He opened a small shop where he worked at a very young age, gaining valuable experience in craftsmanship. Pagani's emergence as a talented engineer came when he was hired by Renault to improve the body of a racing car. His work offered staggering improvements and Pagani was able to showcase his talent. After having success in this sort of small scale, Pagani visited Lamborghini and met with the company's chief technical director Giulio Alfieri. In 1982, he decided to move to Italy and he was hired by Lamborghini. Pagani began working basic jobs such as sweeping the floor, however he was able to work his way up the company. At the age of 20, Pagani had designed and built his first F3 racer. He was a chief engineer at Lamborghini and he built the Countach Evoluzione concept. He tried to persuade Lamborghini to buy an autoclave so they could extend the production of the carbon parts for the Evoluzione. They refused, saying that Ferrari did not have an autoclave, so Lamborghini didn't need one. Pagani borrowed the capital to buy his own autoclave late in 1987 and then, in 1991, he broke away from the company and founded his own consultancy called Modena Design which continues to make carbon fiber composites for Formula One cars and clients like Daimler, Ferrari and Aprilia. Pagani Automobili Modena was founded by Pagani in 1992. The first car he produced was the Zonda which took seven years to complete. His second car produced is the Huayra. It is named after Huayra Tata, the god of the wind in Incan Culture.

  • DRIVEN: 992.2 Porsche GT3 - Back Seats or Big Wing? | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat
    • In this episode we review the new Porsche 911 GT3 - the 992.2 generation if you like your model numbers. Donning his finest James Hoffmann T-shirt, Henry Catchpole wonders if the choice of options for the GT3 has now made it a bit like coffee. Where once the questions were simply ‘milk and sugar?’ or ‘Clubsport? Colour?’, now you have an almost bewildering number of ways in which you can get your caffeine and naturally aspirated rear-engined kicks. We drive the new GT3 on both road and track in Spain. For the roads around Valencia we have a GT3 with Touring pack, Lightweight pack, new folding bucket seats and rear seats. The paint is a rather lovely 964 Polar Silver Metallic (a paint to sample colour). With a six-speed manual gearbox, is it most of the way to a 911S/T or is it more of a daily proposition now that it can carry two (small) people in the back? On the Circuit Ricardo Tormo we drove a GT3 with a wing and a Weissach pack (the first time one has been available on a non-RS GT3), complete with carbon roll cage and the new Magnesium wheels that save 9.1kg or 20lbs over the standard aluminium alloy rims. For the track we also had a PDK gearbox, which, like the manual, has eight per cent shorter ratios than the previous generation. The new ratios are to help compensate for a slight decrease in overall torque from the 4-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine. It still revs to 9000rpm, sounds amazing and produces 503bhp, but maximum torque has gone down from 347lb ft to 332lb ft. To find out about the challenges of simply keeping the naturally aspirated engine alive in the face of ever more stringent regulations, Henry Catchpole spoke to Andreas Preuninger, Porsche’s Director of GT Cars. They also discussed a different sort of Nurburgring lap time for this generation… And on the subject of fast laps, Henry jumped on-board with the ever-spectacular Jörg Bergmeister. You won’t want to miss it as he assaults the kerbs with almost unbelievable commitment. It’s worth pointing out that Jörg is also driving exactly the same car as Henry with no special preparation and on the same Michelin Cup 2 tyres (2 R rubber is available as an option). The price of the new 911 GT3 is £157,300 in the UK and $222,500 in the USA. That is, of course before options, which can quickly add up. The Weissach Package (without carbon roll cage) costs £15,597 or $19,330 while the Lightweight Package for the Touring costs £29,223 or $36,010 and the new folding lightweight bucket seats cost £5,390 or $6860.   • The British MX5: Triumph Spitfire 1500 - car spotting
    • In this car spotting video we have our first non-JDM car: a Triumph Spitfire, but in this video it will become clear why this car is significant for the Japanese car market. This Spitfire was the final incarnation of the range: the Triumph Spitfire 1500. The 1500 stands for the final 1493cc engine which delivered 71 horsepower. With a kerbweight of 790 kilograms it's quite okay for its time. This Spitfire is of the last ones produced: it got first registered in September 1979, if the tweed interior didn't give it away already. I found this Spitfire parked on the third floor of a parking garage in my hometown. It looks immaculate and, judging from the paintjob and perfect interior, I almost dare to say it has never been restored. I really was stunned by its sheer beauty.

    • In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the best touring car racing in the world was happening in Germany. The Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) was a hotbed for manufacturer money and talented drivers, the racing was at its door-banging finest, and the pursuit of competitive edges on the track produced some of the most iconic homologation specials for the road. The most famous of which was the first-ever BMW M3. Based on the E30-generation 3-Series, the M3 was comprehensively reworked by the engineers at BMW Motorsport to battle it out with Ford, Audi, and most of all the Bavarian’s opposition from Stuttgart, Mercedes-Benz. Although no single manufacturer can be said to have dominated the DTM during this period, the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz 190E were consistent favorites, and the definitive rivals of the series that duked it out for the better part of a decade, each winning titles over the efforts of the other. Both the Benz and the Bimmer were treated to Evolution models over the course of their careers, and in 1990 the two carmakers arrived with their last major iterations, the winged 190E Evolution II, and the BMW Sport Evolution.   • This 1973 Porsche 2.7 Carrera RS Is a Race Car for the Street
    • In the early 1970s, Porsche found itself in need of a street car that would allow the fellows in Stuttgart to meet homologation rules for the Group 4 Special GT series. What resulted was the 1973 2.7 Carrera RS, a brawny brother to the 911. With its ducktail rear spoiler, big brakes, and flared rear fenders, the car was an instant classic. Indeed, the car was so popular that Porsche opted to go well beyond the 500-car minimum required for homologation, ultimately producing more than 1500 of the Carrera RS model in 1973. Over the past 40 years, the Carrera RS has earned a reputation as the greatest dual-purpose Porsche ever produced, the very essence of balanced quickness. In 1973, however, owing to some killjoys' concerns about bumpers and emissions and excess glee, the RS was not certified for importation into the United States. And yet, somehow, four of these cars snuck across the border into the US. One of them, serial number 1309, ended up in the hands of famed race car driver and Porsche distributor Vasek Polek. Number 1309 now makes its home with Mr. Mark Haddawy, who seldom misses a chance to sling it through the canyons near his home in Los Angeles, California. As Mark points out, the RS, despite being a 40-year-old car, still holds its own against its modern streetmates. After all, even by today's standards, the RS is fast: it covers zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and sports a top speed of 150 mph. The mystique of the 2.7 RS, however, goes beyond sheer statistics and, at times, can defy description. "I've driven a lot of different sports cars," says Mark. "There's something about the RS that's magical. It's definitely more than the sum of all of its parts." For now, then, we'll just call the RS what it is: a race car for the street. La nuova sfida è testimoniata a Trento dalla presenza di Stéphane Peterhansel, 14 volte vincitore della Dakar, che per la prima volta incontra il pubblico nella nuova veste di pilota Audi. ‘Mr Dakar’ farà parte degli equipaggi Audi che parteciperanno al prossimo rally raid con l’innovativo prototipo elettrico Audi RS Q e-tron presentato in anteprima per l’Italia. Dakar è la coerente sintesi dei due mondi che rappresentano i pilastri nella storia sportiva del Brand: l’endurance e i rally. Se Audi è stata la prima Casa automobilistica a vincere la 24 Ore di Le Mans con un modello a propulsione ibrida, il successo nel rally ha decretato la straordinaria efficacia della tecnologia integrale quattro. Oggi la trazione integrale è una tecnologia condivisa sia dalle vetture da competizione sia dalle vetture di serie convenzionali, ibride plug-in ed elettriche dei quattro anelli. Schierandosi al via della Dakar, una delle ultime grandi sfide motoristiche e ingegneristiche al mondo, Audi attinge ad ampio spettro al proprio know-how sportivo e resta fedele alla propria filosofia di sviluppare nelle competizioni le tecnologie più innovative da trasferire alle future vetture di serie. Audi RS Q e-tron è dotata di tre powertrain derivati dalla monoposto Audi e-tron FE07 di Formula E: due MGU (Motor Generator Unit), una in corrispondenza di ciascun assale, si occupano della trazione, mentre una terza unità agisce quale generatore per contribuire alla ricarica della batteria ad alto voltaggio, specie in frenata. Non essendo possibile attingere energia nel deserto, Audi ha optato per una soluzione on board: l’accumulatore viene rifornito durante la marcia grazie all’azione di un range extender. Funzione, quest’ultima, affidata al performante quattro cilindri TFSI – turbo a iniezione diretta della benzina – derivato dal DTM, il Campionato Tedesco Turismo. Determinazione e costante ricerca di soluzioni innovative testimoniata dal claim “All’Avanguardia della tecnica”, fanno sì che nell’impegno nel rally raid estremo vengano testate tecnologie che poi sono destinate alle vetture stradali, come successo per le vetture ibride plug-in Audi A6 e Audi Q7 TFSI, che accompagneranno gli atleti della Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali nei loro spostamenti durante la stagione che sta per iniziare. La flotta dedicata agli azzurri può contare su due “cuori”: il propulsore termico V6 3.0 TFSI, turbo a iniezione diretta della benzina da 340 CV, e il motore elettrico sincrono a magneti permanenti. Una soluzione di mobilità che garantisce performance e sicurezza assieme ai vantaggi in termini di mobilità, fiscalità e semplicità di fruizione.
