  • Pininfarina Battista review | New 1900hp electric hypercar driven | Autocar
    • Where to begin with the Pininfarina Battista? It’s a model that marks the establishing of Automobili Pininfarina as a new car company in its own right, building on the heritage of the renowned design house. As a result of Automobili Pininfarina deciding to make its own car with its own name on it, it decided that it needed to make a splash. And what could make more of a splash than an electric hypercar with 1900hp (1876bhp) that costs €1.98m? Call it £2 million depending on the exchange rate and local taxes. Performance figures are equally startling. The 0-62mph time is under two seconds. The top speed is more than 217mph. And it'll do 0-186mph in under 12 seconds. Under the skin, the Battista shares a reasonable amount with the Rimac Nevera. The two companies are 'frenemies', they say. Friendly rivals who helped develop the carbon fibre tub, the aluminium subframes that hold the suspension and the drivetrain. The drivetrain is a 120kWh battery which drives an electric motor at each wheel - each rear motor makes 603bhp and each front one 335bhp. Any one of them alone would make reasonable progress. Put them all together and, well, you can expect fireworks. Pininfarina will build just 150 Battistas over the next three years. This is one of the first.   • Ferrari Roma v Aston Martin DB11 AMR v Bentley Continental GT | The world's best grand tourer?
    • What's the world's greatest grand tourer? They are coupes that blend comfort and sport to the highest degree. Could it be the new for 2021 Ferrari Roma? It is fabulous. And fast. It has a 3.9-litre twin turbocharged V8 making 612bhp and 561lb ft, which is enough to propel this 1570kg car from 0-62mph in 3.4sec and on to a top speed of 199mph. In the UK, the Roma's price is £170,984 before options. Or could it be the Bentley Continental GT? Also recently revised, the GT V8 has a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8, slightly down on power on the Ferrari, but still making a fulsome 542bhp and 568lb ft. This 4wd car is the heaviest one here, at 2149kg, and completes the 0-62mph dash in 4.0sec and goes on to a 198mph top speed. It costs from £166,200. Finally, then, is the Aston Martin DB11 AMR. Because this is the AMR model it has nothing less than a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, making some 630bhp and 516lb ft. Like the Ferrari it's rear-wheel drive, so weighs less than the Bentley, at 1870kg, and is good for a 0-62mph sprint in 3.7sec and has a 208mph top speed. It costs from £178,495 and, on paper, looks like it sits somewhere between the Ferrari and Bentley in terms of size and sportiness. How, though, will that turn out on the road?     • What would it take for you to follow a dream? Impossibly small, light, fast, and loud, Alpine sports cars have excelled at just about every form of motorsport they were entered in, but especially rally, and hillclimb competition. The cars are unlike anything else—and are just the thing to inspire a man to restore them…many of them. “Sometimes, when stepping into my garage, and looking at my cars, I am surprised that it is already 30 years and the Alpine hasn’t worn out yet,” says Jürgen Clauss, founder of alpineLAB, a German shop that specializes in these small French sports cars. “I still like to look, drive, and work on these cars every day,” he says, “To me, it was always unique, always something special; you even had to have certain ergonomic prerequisites to drive an Alpine.” Dedicated to getting the details right during preservation and restoration, Clauss says that he sees something special in each component of classic cars, but especially an Alpine. “To me, each and every part is a sculpture on its own,” he says. “You just have to open your eyes and see the beauty of those parts (and) to be passionate about this hobby, even without a finished car.” What started as a hobby and collection based around street versions of the Renault-powered Alpine A110, Clauss now focuses on the race cars. It’s been a long, 3-year relationship with the marque, which invariably led to him being somewhat poetic when explaining his passion. “Owning an Alpine is quite like a relationship with a beautiful woman: Somedays, it’s exhausting, but in the end, it’s all about maintaining the passion, highlighting her beauty, and loving her.” We couldn’t agree more. The Shelby GT500 appears well equipped to reassert itself as the top horse in the stable. Ford developed a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission specifically for this engine and fitted huge 16.5-inch-diameter front brake rotors clamped upon with six-piston calipers. The adaptive suspension can adjust to various modes, including settings for track-day heroics or drag-race showdowns. Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye There aren't a lot of vehicles we consider to be muscle cars. The 2019 Dodge Challenger, with its outlandish horsepower and classic styling, certainly qualifies. Muscle cars are also known for their lack of practicality, but the Challenger bucks that trend by making fewer sacrifices in everyday usability thanks to its large trunk and relatively spacious rear seats. The new 797-hp SRT Hellcat Redeye is basically the retired Demon but with a slightly detuned V8 and less drag-race-specific hardware. There are also some changes in the supporting trims. All-wheel drive is now available on the base SXT, the Widebody treatment is offered on the R/T Scat Pack, and a new dual-snorkel hood increases the Hellcat output by 10 hp. Some trims also come with fewer standard features and corresponding price drops. Even without these latest changes, the Challenger would have remained one of our favorite vehicles in any class. It doesn't have the corner-carving chops of the Camaro or the Mustang, and we're quite fine with that. Not many cars have this kind of sinister style or performance that won't break the bank or overtly compromise your daily drive. The Challenger may not be as quick or as responsive as the Mustang or the Camaro, but it's always a hoot to drive. The Dodge's sheer size makes in-town maneuvering a bit tough (the wide-body fenders don't help), but the meaty tires and upgraded suspension aid handling and body roll. But the only quality-of-life improvement is the upgrade to Chevy's newest and quickest infotainment system, the aptly named Chevrolet Infotainment 3. Nothing that makes the Camaro a tremendous performer and rewarding car to drive has changed, but nothing that makes it an unappealing choice for daily living has changed either. Spend any time behind the wheel of a Camaro, and you'll quickly realize it's sharper and more purposeful than its American muscle-car rivals, especially when equipped with the 1LE package — an assortment of performance upgrades meant to improve handling, steering and braking. For 2019 models, Chevy has expanded the 1LE offering, making it available with all three engine options, including the turbocharged 2.0-liter. In many ways, the Camaro feels like the odd man out in the American muscle-car trinity. The Dodge Challenger has stayed true to form and is basically a rolling couch you can equip with a 797-horsepower V8, while the Ford Mustang has turned into a solid all-arounder with broad appeal for coupe buyers. But the Camaro has become a true sports car with all the ups and downs that entails, essentially abandoning all the traditional muscle-car traits except high-output V8 engines. Four years after the Mission E concept debuted, and a week after its initial debut, the Porsche Taycan has arrived at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. It's already proven its chops by picking up a record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Likely even more important to buyers is that there'll finally be a real alternative to the Tesla Model S, which has long ruled the large luxury electric sedan roost. Whether or not Porsche will be able to loosen Tesla's stranglehold on the segment remains to be seen, but attractive looks, gonzo performance and a tech-laden cabin appear to put the Taycan in the position to do just that when it goes on sale later this year. Visually, Porsche designers were able to carry over a healthy helping of design traits from the Mission E concept to the production Taycan. The exterior's hunkered-down stance, low-sloping front end, pronounced fenders, flush door handles and continuous rear light strip all make the cut. Four-point LED daytime running lights are also part of the package. At launch, the Taycan will be offered in a Turbo trim riding on 20-inch wheels, and Turbo S specification that gets standard carbon fiber trim and sits on 21-inch wheels. (Yes, we realize it's odd to use "Turbo" and "Turbo S" on a car that doesn't use turbochargers -- or, you know, an internal combustion engine.) With a drag coefficient of 0.22, the Taycan Turbo possesses the lowest drag of any vehicle in Porsche's current production lineup. Full underbody paneling also contributes to its slippery aerodynamics. The Taycan Turbo S is slightly less efficient at cutting through the air, with a 0.25 drag coefficient. At its core, the Taycan's body is built from a mixture of steel and aluminum joined together with a variety of different welding processes, screws, rivets and adhesives. Upping passenger safety is hot-formed steel for the body's pillars, side roof frame and seat cross member, and boron steel for the bulkhead cross member. All of this improves passenger safety. For performance purposes, the shock absorber mounts, axle mounts and rear side members are constructed of die-cast or forged aluminum, while all body panels minus the front and rear bumpers are also made from aluminum to shave weight. In total, 37% of the Taycan is made of aluminum.

  • FIRST LOOK: Porsche 911 ST – Ultimate 911 with GT3 RS Power | Top Gear
    • Welcome to the Porsche 911 S/T. Designed by Porsche as a present to itself on the 60th anniversary of the 911 (there’s 1,963 planned in honour of the birth year), the S/T revives a grand old name from 1969 when a 911 S was sprinkled with a touch of motorsport fairy dust to become the S/T - a fearsome competition car that did without the aid of big wings and hefty aero. A kind of beautiful Frankenstein’s monster, the S/T was a competition car, but not prolific. The modern S/T follows the same path, though with much more modern vim. Mounted in the back is the naturally-aspirated, 521bhp 4-litre boxer from the GT3 RS coupled to that short-ratio manual (with shorter cogs than a GT3). There are no big wings bar a short Gurney flap on the electric rear spoiler, which itself doesn’t raise quite as high as other 911s. The rear-wheel steer system is ditched to save weight and complexity, and the bonnet, front wings, ‘cage, rear anti-roll bars and shear panel underneath are all carbon fibre. The wheels are centre-lock and magnesium, the glass thinned to shave precious pounds. Even the battery has been on a diet, and now consists of a lightweight race-style lithium-ion unit. Cobble all this together with the slim carbon bucket seats along with weight savings from the powertrain and clutch, and the S/T becomes the lightest production 911. With a kerbweight of 1,380kg, it’s 40kg lighter than a manual GT3 Touring. Unbelievably, its power output matches the V12 812 Competizione. You’re looking at the thick, scary end of 819bhp from a 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 and electric motor. Sheesh. When spooled up, both units send that mammoth power output to the rear wheels to record a 0-62mph time of 2.9s, a 0-124mph time of 7.3s, top speed of over 205mph, and a Fiorano lap time of 1m 21s; that latter number matches up to the Ferrari F12tdf.
