  • This C2 Corvette Stingray Is A Sacred Monster
    • The Fourth of July may not be celebrated outside of the US, but an appreciation of American muscle knows no bounds; join us this week as we take a rumbly ride in Mathieu Houtreille’s crisp Ermine White 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray through the back roads surrounding Luxembourg, Belgium. Like many of us, Mathieu grew up under a gearhead’s roof. His father, Jean-Luc Houtreille, ensured he raised his son properly. “Ever since I learned to walk, my dad took me to all the car affairs,” Mathieu tells, “I would see the mechanics work under warm hoods, and the smell that emerged would captivate me.” A natural-born car-obsessed boy, where his father leaned towards the Italian marques, Mathieu differed, oddly falling for old American steel and iron. Mat says, “For me, the monsters that gave me goose bumps were the ones with massive V8s and a thunderous sound coming out of their tailpipes. That's what I loved.” Forever longing for Detroit muscle, a trip with his wife stateside sealed his fate with Corvettes. Referring to this excursion, Mat clarifies, “It is a country with a lot of wide-open spaces. It is magical, and you can't understand unless you've been there, and taken those roads, because you can't describe it [otherwise].” Learning of the ‘50s and ‘60s American car culture’s love of machine as well as its street racing scene, Mat realized this era was a special time that no longer exists, admitting that oftentimes, “If you tell people you hand-wash your car and you love your car, they will think you're dumb.” The sad truth is, most people view that mentality as outdated, but not Mathieu of course. Call it born in the wrong country in the wrong generation if you want, but we prefer to regard Mathieu’s passion a dying romance we’re happy to see still has a heart with a strong pulse. After wheeling a C3 for a while, his appreciation for the earlier C2 Stingray turned into an obsession. “I had to acquire one of those sacred monsters,” Mathieu says, determined, “my love for the C2 grew. With its perfect aesthetics, it is the epitome of the mid-‘60s.” After seeing a flawlessly restored C2 in the flesh at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas, Mat’s desire for his own Stingray only continued moving from want to need, and he was lucky enough to find an ad a few months later for an Ermine White 1965 model—his preferred color. With a friend accompanying him to see the car, they arrived to the seller’s town. “It smelled of dreams,” Mat says smiling, “It smelled so good.” The seller turned out to be an avid car collector with a multi-story garage full of classic goodies. “The door opened, and I saw cars everywhere.” Suppressing his excitement as to not get his hopes up too high for the Corvette in question, Mat smirks, “It was time for a test drive.” Too intimidated to drive the car initially, Mat turned down the seller’s offer and insisted on riding shotgun. A drive post-rainfall through forested roads at 110 miles per hour was all the conviction Mathieu really needed, but the step-off of the accelerator which summoned vicious backdraft pops and bangs was the final verdict: this was going to be the one.     • The GTA is back. Yup, the legendary acronym GTA has returned on the the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA. It stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita in which, crucially, Alleggerita means 'lightened'. It's a heavily modified version of Alfa Romeo's Giulia Quadrifoglio, already our favourite super saloon car. Think of the GTA as the equivalent of a Jaguar XE SV Project 8 or the BMW M4 GTS. Only 500 will be built and there are actually two variants, the GTA and the GTAm. This is the latter, which is even more hardcore than the GTA because it has a roll cage where the rear seats used to be, race front seats with six point harnesses and has had even more weight removed. At a claimed 1540kg it's a full 100kg lighter than the QF. Full technical specifications are below. The Giulia GTAm, says Alfa, is "a veritable supercar for everyday use". Is that so? In fact it's probably more fascinating, because its design alone captured the attention and desire of legions of car enthusiasts who don't even bloody like electric cars. This 137 mile range Pokemon faced thing has a 35.5kWh battery pack which can be rapid charged in half an hour at 100kw. 0-62 takes 8.3 seconds with this 150hp launch edition car, but you will be able to option it with 134hp thereafter. On paper it almost loses in every respect to its plug-in peers, but there's a charm to the £27,000 e, and for some that's enough. Using the power of finance you'll be able to live with one from under £300 a month. Regardless of whether you give a toss about zero emission cars, there is no denying this kind of design is precisely what Honda does best.     • The Italian language is very good – molto bene – at turning simple car names into lyrical poetry. ‘Four doors’ becomes ‘Quattroporte’. ‘Red head’ becomes ‘Testarossa’. And so, while this new Ferrari is called the 12 Cylinder, Maranello would prefer you wrapped your lips around their way of talking, and called it the Dodici Cilindri. (But, Because Marketing, the name is written out as 12Cilindri.) It’s an on-the-nose celebration of Ferrari’s signature dish: a big V12. A mighty 6.5-litre instrument, mounted way behind the front axle, and under a gigantic clamshell ‘cofango’ bonnet designed to showcase the engine bay more dramatically than the 812 Superfast or F12. Job done… Looks wise, there are hints of 365 Daytona at the front. There are also active aero flaps at the rear. Inside, Ferrari’s gone fully screen-gaga and deleted all the buttons. Good luck tuning the radio when 814bhp arrives at the rear wheels before the tyres are warm ‘n’ sticky. Unusually, Ferrari has revealed the €425,000 Spider drop-top along with the €390,000 coupe. But I’ve had quite the different run up to driving this car. I got to see it before the launch, and thus looked at it with fresh eyes and no outside opinions. And for me as a big AMG fan, the more aggressive look appealed to me. It reminded me of the old 328, the modern 328 hommage, or the epic CSL Hommage concept. Back then that #W M3 was in Green, then I got to see a stealthy matte grey when I visited the M Town set to film the ad for the performance wheels, this made me more of a believer. The M3 touring I saw in secret finished it off!! And finally today, the big drive. I’ve already driven both the M4 and this M3, and as a spoiler I can tell you, they’ve both smashed my expectations to pieces! M have worked hard on the new M3, but it gets lost in the controversial grille, and the similar performance on paper: not to mention the X3m not helping with it’s lacklustre introduction using the same engine. But looking inside as we will today, everything is from scratch. New engine, 8 speed ZF gearbox, suspension, exhaust system, rigidity measure... Tonnes has been done to make these cars as good as they are, l no stone left unturned, so where on paper performance seems similar it’s the drive that really shows us more! Today we’re going to do a deep dive and check out every detail and then burn some rubber M Town style in the new M3 comp!   • Is the Aventador S the Lamborghiniest of Lamborghinis?
    • The Lamborghini Aventador S is the most ferocious bull in the line-up with 740 horsepower and various upgrades to the iconic Aventador, it means business in a very strange way. If you asked a child to draw a supercar, this is more or less what they would come up with so let's find out why... I previously drove an Aventador S during Lamborghini's Winter Accademia on snow and ice but thanks to Lamborghini Edinburgh this was my first time out on regular tarmac and in particular the countryside roads of Scotland. Prior to getting underway we can take a walkaround to discuss what has changed from the original Aventador to the new Aventador S, explore the interior and then get started.
