He has to coolest toys, hottest women and best one liners. But his taste in cars is liable to get him killed. I mean, rocking around in an Aston is going to draw attention to yourself isn't it? So why not try a Volvo? A Volvo P1800 to be precise... I say this because Simon Templar, the Saint, used one. His P1800 S is one of television's most iconic motors and, I think, one of the better spy cars. The Volvo P1800 is Volvo's second crack at a sports car. Its first, the P1900 was not a rousing success. They sold (almost literally) a handful and went off the idea of making anything sporty for a while. The P1800 project was a labour of love and, as with all these things, had a rocky start. Volvo couldn't make the car itself, so sought out the help of Karmann. Karmann were initially keen but their chief client, Volkswagen, wasn't happy about a secondary partnership with a rival. The deal was killed and the P1800's future was in doubt. Stiff upper lips and the famous British work ethic stepped in to save the day -- Jensen threw its hat into the ring and won the contract. The firm was to make 10,000 cars. It didn't. It only got through 6,000 before Volvo politely asked them to stop. Why? Because while British engineering was top notch, our ability to actually build cars was not. At all. Volvo took P1800 production in house for the rest of its run, creating the P1800 S, E and ES (an estate thingy). Simon Templar's involvement with the car is pretty simple -- the show's producers asked Jaguar for an E-Type and they said no. As with many things, the second choice ended up with the better deal. I'm not saying the E-Type was in any way forgotten, but how stratospherically famous would it have been if it had been the Saint's motor? Thought so... The Audi A1 is a lovely little car. It's small, unassuming, popular, well made and really good to drive. Its build quality is up there with Audi standards, as are its engines. Like the cars it shares its platform with (the SEAT Ibiza, Skoda Fabia & VW Polo, in case you didn't know) it's perfect for the hustle and bustle of the city. However, unlike its VW Group stablemates, it doesn't have a properly 'hot' variant. Yes, the 1.4TSI has the same engine as the SEAT Ibiza Cupra, VW Polo GTI and Skoda Fabia vRS, but it's just another car in the line up. There's no S1 lurking in the wings. This is where the A1 Quattro comes in to play. Its tiny engine bay has been stuffed with the 2.0-litre turbo motor from the last generation Audi S3. Its 252bhp makes it, unsurprisingly, rather sprightly. It'll see off the 0-62mph dash in 5.7seconds and hit 152mph. But that's not all there is to the A1, oh no. It's the only A1 with Audi's Quattro four wheel drive system, which means it's incredibly grippy... to a point. Its short wheelbase and immense power make it a touch twitchy and its limit, once met, can become a distant, spinny memory. There's plenty of trick and rally-inspired engineering in there too. Carbon fibre this, rally-bred that litter its tiny cabin and make people interested in engineering go all weak at the wrists. For me, the A1 Quattro's strength lies in its look -- big air dams, massive spoiler, 'Quattro' badges dotted around the place, white wheels, giant exhausts and red details in the right places. It just looks... right. Like a little homolgated rally car for real people. Sort of. I say sort of because only 333 will ever be made. They're all left hand drive and they've all been sold. Oh, and if you could get your mitts on one it'd set you back over £40,000. What Audi has created is a little chunk of fun; a little piece of loveliness that only ever happens once in a blue moon. For that we should be eternally grateful, not least because it proves that someone at Audi has a sense of humour. It's a slice of rare automotive legend and one that we had to have a deeper look at. Caution: features porno music and velvet. When you think of 70's supercars you tend to think of Lamborghinis and Ferraris - big, wedgy things that make a lovely noise and go very quickly indeed. You don't tend to think of BMW, do you? We can't blame you for that. It's a brand that isn't really synonymous with supercars. Fast saloons, yes, but a supercar? Well, in the late 70's BMW did indeed produce a supercar, the M1. Very few were made and its development is fraught with delays, financial troubles and moving goal posts. It's such a shame that the M1 didn't do as well as it could and should have. It lasted from 1978 - 1981, not a huge amount of time in anyone's book, and while it was around it was supposed to have been racing its little socks off on the track. Instead, BMW was trying to sell enough of them in order to qualify to enter the races thanks to a rule change at the last minute that meant a certain number of cars had to be sold before they could race. It was also supposed to be around a lot sooner than it was. A deal made with Lamborghini to produce the car went more sour than a pint of double cream left in a kiln and BMW very nearly ended up without a car at all. It's a wonderful thing, though. The big, red monster we had created such a presence wherever it went that even though driving with the windows open was a necessity (no air con, naturally, and heat leaking into the cabin caused me to sweat so much I lost 2lbs) and the heckles, shouts and endless "Which Ferrari's that, mate?" didn't half drive me mad. Driving it in the countryside was good fun, though its width and, erm, older controls made passing trucks, busses and the like a bit of a nightmare. Driving it in town, however, was a different experience. Tight London side roads and suicyclists make driving a behemoth such as the M1 a dicier proposition than it would have been when it was new. Even though it's giant, unknown and difficult to pilot the BMW M1 was truly special. It was a car that so few know about yet its fans utterly adore (we met a guy while shooting who went weak at the knees when he saw it), it's a very special beast. So for a track oriented vehicle, this has all of the daily driving aspects to be able and use it on the street. It is quiet, but the supercharger wine is very very loud, but it is comfortable for daily use.   • I Found a Hidden New York City Car Collection!
    • Tucked away in the streets of New York City lies this hidden jem of a car collection! Totally unobvious from the outside but housing a raw garage feel with 15 or or so cars including the likes of a Ferrari F12 TDF, Porsche GT2 RS and more great supercars. If you know NYC, to have any kind of self parking space is something, to create this environment is just amazing! Based around a love for Ferrari and Porsche cars, those cover the majority of the very bright and colourful collection - right up my street. The Ferrari corner includes the Gialo Triplo Strato F12tdf, a car that I couldn't resist starting up to hear the V12 explode into life. Either side of it is a 458 Speciale and an incredibly rare 599 GTB Alonso Edition of which only 40 were made and this being the only one with a leather interior. Sitting up top is the 360 Modena, the first car of the collection. On the other side lie the Porsches, flagshipped by the GT2 RS in PTS Golf Blue (not Gulf Blue) and two 911 Rs, one in immaculate factory spec and the other with AC and used regularly. In addition is a 997 GT3 RS, 991 GT3 RS, new Fashion Grey manual GT3 and more. To add to the collection we also have the BMW M4 GTS and Mercedes CLK Black Series. It's a huge thanks to the owner for the hospitality to visit and see the collection, and to bring my Ford GT in to join the line up!   • I've BOUGHT a NEW TVR Griffith!
    • TVR ARE BACK! This is the new TVR Griffith, revealed for the first time at the Goodwood Revival and I'm pleased to say that I have an order for an early car as a future Shmeemobile! What do you think? The British marque came under new ownership 4 years ago and is back now with the resurrection of the Griffith name; a car focused on driver engagement with a naturally aspirated V8, manual gearbox, rear wheel drive and a host of trick technologies. Developed in partnership with Gordan Murray Design and Cosworth; it's powered by a 5.0l V8 with 500PS and weights just 1250kg with the iStream chassis. Top speed is in excess of 200mph and the sprint to 60mph comes in sub-4; it's fast! The design is iconic TVR with side-exit exhausts, touches that come from their history but a modernised and completed look. The man in charge, Les Edgar, assures also that this is a new company and therefore reliability will be in a new league. I have a deposit placed via the lovely folks at Top Cats Racing, due for an early car in early 2019 (or late 2018 if I'm lucky) and honestly, I cannot wait! This is designed as a purist driving machine, it's an iconic British manufacturer, and I'm very excited for their journey.
