| Description | The Triumph name started in 1886 selling imported bicycles, they started producing motorcycles in 1902 and motor cars in 1920. Purchased by the Standard Motor Company in 1945, and from 1959 was known as Standard Triumph. Purchased by Leyland Motors in 1960, which became British Leyland in 1968.
The GT6 was similar to the Triumph Spitfire, the Spitfire was based on the Triumph Herald, using the Heralds 1147cc engine and running gear This, the later GT6 6 cyl version, based on the 6 cyl Triumph Vitesse. The GT6 was built from 1966-73 and was only available as a 2 door fastback.
The 1966-68 Mk I GT6 was similar to the Spitfire Mk II with the grille above the bumper bar, the GT6 got a power bulge in the hood and the doors got qtr light windows. Engine; 95hp 2000 6 cyl
The 1968-70 Mk II GT6 was similar to the Spitfire Mk III, the front bumper was raised, suspension improved, again a power bulge hood. Engine; 104hp 2000 6 cyl.
The 1970-73 Mk III GT6 was similar to the Spitfire Mk IV, a cut off rear end and smoother front, door handles were recessed, again a power bulge hood. Engine; 104hp 2000 6 cyl |
