  • Flat Out with the £2.5m Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss!
    • The Mercedes McLaren SLR Stirling Moss is without doubt one of my dream cars, with only 75 of them in the world (and only 4 in white!) it is both exceptionally rare but also incredibly powerful boasting 650hp and weighing 200kg less than it's 722 Coupe sibling. Factor in those elements, and you're looking at a car worth approximately £2-2.5 million! During Supercar Owners Circle's event at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, we join Mechatronik for an experience firstly with the SLR Stirling Moss, but also then with the almost-as-rare CLK DTM - a car that is one of only 100 units. Lastly we can also glimpse inside the fabulous CLK GTR, a first for me to take a seat in one but a raw poster car of my generation. Mechatronik are based in Stuttgart, and carry out restorations and works to particularly rare and special Mercedes models, hence the line-up we see here including the SLR 722 as well. For the SOC event they presented a number of their ultimate machines, all cars that are well and truly flagships from my era and a dream to be able to see, let alone experience so it is a huge thanks to them for the opportunity to do so. After an introduction to the SLR Stirling Moss, we can jump on board for a few gentle laps at the Goodwood circuit. Of course you'll have to forgive the inability for me to accurately run a microphone due to the entirely open nature of the car and the sheer wind buffeting that comes as a result! In any case, the power and torque from the car was obvious, it's capable of reaching a top speed of 350km/h (or 220mph), and as an experience is quite clearly something incredible. When we then jump into the CLK DTM, a car with 590hp that paid tribute to Bernd Schneider's winning DTM series car, but with as much power as the fastest cars from AMG now from it's supercharged 5.4l V8. Also very rare and dramatically increasing in value, the DTM is a tremendously stripped out, raw and dramatic experience. Where McLaren had initially set its sights on challenging manufacturers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, the GT takes aim at fellow Brits, Aston Martin and Bentley. Both make cars that adhere to the list of requirements of a Grand Tourer. Powerful, fast, but comfortable, luxurious and a certain degree of practicality and ease of use. The DB11 AMR and Continental GT tick all of those boxes and certainly are the kind of thing that would have come to mind to me if I was to imagine what new GT should be. Front-engined, rear wheel drive, 2+2 layout with a practical trunk space at the rear. McLaren disagrees. The GT sticks to their tried and tested formula of a carbon tub two seater with a mid-mounted engine. Just like every single other McLaren. It has a twin-turbo, 4-litre V8 good for 611bhp, 465 pounds-feet of torque and a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds. That all sounds very familiar. On paper the stats put it right in amongst the current stable of McLaren supercars. And while the styling of the GT is more understated than the 570S or 720S, lacking some of the bolder design features that those cars have in favour of clean lines and an elegant silhouette, it’s still very much recognisable as a McLaren. The question begs then, what does it do differently? After less than a mile on the road with the McLaren GT you realise that the answer to that is, a lot. The engine may have started as a supercar powertrain but it has been substantially modified to suit a different kind of driving. New pistons, manifold and smaller turbos smooth out the power delivery. Torque is now available sooner and for longer, giving the driver less surprises as the needles turn to the right. The sound that engine makes actually benefits from the Grand Tourer packaging of the McLaren GT. The longer body has lengthened the exhaust which in turn gives out a lower, richer note. For a twin turbocharged engine it sounds closer to an old fashioned V8 It’s not just the engine though that has been meddled with. The brakes and steering are dialled in to be stable and comfortable at speed rather than sharp and responsive. There’s a hefty weight to the wheel and the pedals that can catch you at surprise if you’ve hopped in expecting the GT to drive like the 570S. You might need to put a little bit more pressure on the middle pedal to scrub off any real speed in the GT but the advantage is that you can be ultra precise. Rather than being able to stop the car dead in its tracks with just a slight push of the brakes the GT makes even the most haphazard of driving inputs feel smooth and measured. Similarly the steering requires more effort but with it give the car more poise and stability at speed. Although the throttle response can be adjusted across the various modes - comfort, sport and track - it feels radically different from similar modes in other McLarens. If you want the car can still perform like a supercar., launching off the line and gathering a lot of speed in very little time. The difference is that you have to very specifically ask for it. All modern supercars are easier to drive than the numbers on a spec sheet might suggest, making them easy to drive around town without felling like you’re just the slightest miss-press of a pedal away from spinning off the road. But the McLaren GT takes it a step further making it just as easy to drive at speed. What you lack in the ability to hit every apex and maximise your cornering speed has been replaced by the ability to enjoy speed in a more relaxed fashion. It’s not a challenging drive that’s going to ask you to push your driving ability to the limit, rather the McLaren GT is forgiving and predictable no matter how fast you go. McLaren says the suspension is equipped with proactive dampers which not only ready the road as it is but use the driver inputs to predict how to set up the car a few milliseconds early. The result is a car that you can truly mistreat, hard acceleration and then hard braking combined with wild turns you’re not punished with any kind of roll or pitch in the car. Drive over a bump however and the car soaks it up impressively. Without felling too firm, even in the more sports orientated settings, the car can handle more enthusiastic driving.

Without being too technical because time was short and the car is excruciatingly valuable, what a behemoth of a machine it is. Armed with a bypass valve for as much noise as you could imagine, the intake above your head sucking air through to the engine and an amount of drama on the road that's virtually incomparable, this was certainly one of the experiences of my lifetime. When we returned, we take a quick look at the LaFerrari's electric mode, and the Mercedes 6x6's self-inflating tyre system. Boys and their toys... Welcome back to RBR, and today is all about the #BMWM #M5 hybrid G90. This is the seventh-generation model and it's a whole new concept combining a 585HP V8 engine with a 197hp electric motor. But despite the impressive figures of 727HP and 1000NM -- everyone is crying fowl of the weight figure. And rightly so, it’s almost 500kg heaver than the last M5! Will that extra bulk ruin its typical #bmw driving dynamics? Let's find out! Today I will drive the car in Munich, and we will put it through it’s paces: ncluding its 0-60 time (claimed 3.5 seconds and tested on launch) and see if the chassis tech can keep it sharp on the road despite its size and weight. In this video, we need to answer the big questions: * Is the M5 Hybrid still the driving machine we need it to be? * Does the hybrid system make it slower than the old M5 as figures suggest? * Is the M3 not a better alternative now? I’ll also go over the basis of the car with you again as I peel back the skin and explain how the hybrid system works, as well as why BMW’s approach to the battery position etc may be better than rivals. I’m also keen to test out the electric mode which gives 197HP and 280NM of torque from its electric motor, powered by an 18.6 kW battery. Apparently it offers a range of 43 miles, something i’ll also confirm today! Despite the added weight, the car features the best M has to offer in terms of underpinnings: we have M xDrive with an active M differential, drift mode, and a near-actuator slip limiter, as well as adaptive M suspension with electronic dampers at each wheel. Rear-wheel steering (1.5 degrees) adds to the car’s agility, and there’s been significant chassis stiffening to improve handling, along with a rigid mounted variable steering rack. So, with all that M DNA packed in, will the weight really kill it? Can the BMW M5 Hybrid live up to its legendary predecessors? Watch to find out! At between 2-3 million dollars it costs a lot, but it's worth it. #Lamborghini #LamborghiniSian #V12 #Hybrid When Lamborghini says you can have a few hours behind the wheel of its first production hybrid supercar, you're not going to let a rainy British winter's day stand in your way. So I find myself in the heart of the British countryside with the keys to the Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 in my hand, and the Millbrook proving ground's alpine test circuit and high-speed bowl at my disposal. The Sian is a first for Lamborghini: a mild-hybrid supercar. Its name comes from the Bolognese word for lightning. The alphanumeric appendix refers to the initials of former Volkswagen Group head Ferdinand Piech -- the man responsible for bringing Lamborghini into the Group's portfolio -- and 1937, the year of his birth. Only 63 examples will be built, commemorating the incorporation of Automobili Lamborghini in 1963. Naturally, every car is already spoken for. On sight, the Sian activates all the same neutrons that fired when I first saw a photo of the LP400 Countach. Like all the best Lamborghinis, the Sian's design appears to have been lifted directly from the imagination of an excited child. But even by normal Lamborghini standards the Sian looks futuristic and wild. Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini's head of design, went out of his way to give the Sian an especially large amount of eye-catching details, with creases and cutouts everywhere, bringing the Sian right up to the line of looking ridiculous without actually crossing it. I mean, it has fins that wouldn't have looked out of place on a 1960s Cadillac Eldorado. It's a bold choice. The interior, by contrast, is quite restrained -- on the Lambo scale, anyway. The steering wheel is especially spartan with not a single button or switch. The Sian gets the same larger, portrait-oriented infotainment screen as the Huracan Evo, although its positioning is far from convenient, located quite low and far from the dash. Still, it makes the cabin feel more contemporary than that of, say, the Aventador. From the missile-key-style guard for the engine start button to the shapely, 3D-printed housing for the air vents and the illuminated supercapacitor sign, there are still plenty of flourishes to make you and everyone around you think you're driving a spaceship. But what's most important about the Sian is what's under the skin. The Sian is based on the Aventador SVJ, with an identical chassis and suspension, and the same V12 engine. The Sian, however, adds an electric motor to make this Lamborghini's first production hybrid. A quick bit of history: In the ancient before-times of 2013 when Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche launched their so-called holy trinity of hybrid supercars, Lamborghini was notably absent. At the time, Lamborghini's then-CEO Stephan Winkelmann dismissed the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder as compromised and overweight. Adding big, lithium-ion batteries to a supercar simply wasn't on Lambo's roadmap. Fast forward a few years and Lamborghini showed the world how it would enter the world of electrification, debuting the Sian FKP 37 at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. What's a supercapacitor? Anyone who's pulled apart a broken gadget will have encountered these small cylinders soldered to circuit boards. Their ability to quickly store and deploy large amounts of energy make them great alternatives to batteries when ultra-fast recharge time is a benefit and their quick depletion isn't a problem. A flashlight using a supercapacitor instead of a battery may only run for an hour, but it will recharge in 60 seconds. The Sian's 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 is the same engine you'll find in the Aventador SVJ, just with titanium inlet valves and some ECU tweaks. In the SVJ, this engines produces 759 hp; in the Sian, 774 hp. Add in the 34 hp from the electric motor and you get to the staggering total output of 808 hp. That's in a car that costs somewhere between $2 million and $3 million, depending on spec, easily four times the sticker price of the Aventador SVJ. For both cars, accelerating to 62 mph takes 2.8 seconds and their top speeds are a claimed 217 mph. Off the line, the benefits of the Sian's electric motor are minimal. At higher speeds, however, the electric motor fills in the spaces where torque might be lacking, allowing for smoother and quicker acceleration at speed. Successor to the Diablo and flagship of the automaker's lineup, the Murciélago was introduced as a coupé in 2001. The Murcielago was first available in North America for the 2002 model year. The final variation to wear the Murciélago nameplate was the LP 670–4 SuperVeloce, powered by the largest and final evolution of the Lamborghini V12 engine. Production of the Murciélago ended on November 5, 2010, with a total run of 4,099 cars.[1] Its successor, the Aventador, was released at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show S222

The grille, it probably hurts those who don’t like it more, because this is the Flagship of #BMWM, an undeniable fact when you look at its history! But I’ve had quite the different run up to driving this car. I got to see it before the launch, and thus looked at it with fresh eyes and no outside opinions. And for me as a big AMG fan, the more aggressive look appealed to me. It reminded me of the old 328, the modern 328 hommage, or the epic CSL Hommage concept. Back then that #W M3 was in Green, then I got to see a stealthy matte grey when I visited the M Town set to film the ad for the performance wheels, this made me more of a believer. The M3 touring I saw in secret finished it off!! And finally today, the big drive. I’ve already driven both the M4 and this M3, and as a spoiler I can tell you, they’ve both smashed my expectations to pieces! M have worked hard on the new M3, but it gets lost in the controversial grille, and the similar performance on paper: not to mention the X3m not helping with it’s lacklustre introduction using the same engine. But looking inside as we will today, everything is from scratch. New engine, 8 speed ZF gearbox, suspension, exhaust system, rigidity measure... Tonnes has been done to make these cars as good as they are, l no stone left unturned, so where on paper performance seems similar it’s the drive that really shows us more! Today we’re going to do a deep dive and check out every detail and then burn some rubber M Town style in the new M3 comp!   • FIRST LOOK: Ferrari 12Cilindri – Silly Name, Crazy 820bhp V12!
    • The Italian language is very good – molto bene – at turning simple car names into lyrical poetry. ‘Four doors’ becomes ‘Quattroporte’. ‘Red head’ becomes ‘Testarossa’. And so, while this new Ferrari is called the 12 Cylinder, Maranello would prefer you wrapped your lips around their way of talking, and called it the Dodici Cilindri. (But, Because Marketing, the name is written out as 12Cilindri.) It’s an on-the-nose celebration of Ferrari’s signature dish: a big V12. A mighty 6.5-litre instrument, mounted way behind the front axle, and under a gigantic clamshell ‘cofango’ bonnet designed to showcase the engine bay more dramatically than the 812 Superfast or F12. Job done… Looks wise, there are hints of 365 Daytona at the front. There are also active aero flaps at the rear. Inside, Ferrari’s gone fully screen-gaga and deleted all the buttons. Good luck tuning the radio when 814bhp arrives at the rear wheels before the tyres are warm ‘n’ sticky. Unusually, Ferrari has revealed the €425,000 Spider drop-top along with the €390,000 coupe.
