  • Manual Gearboxes Are Back! Aston Martin Valour vs Porsche 911 S/T
    • EVs and ever-stricter emissions regulations mean the manual gearbox is becoming rarer – and yet there is also a bit of a renaissance occurring. The £2.8m GMA T.50 is only available with a manual gearbox, the £2.2m Pagani Utopia can be had with two or three pedals (with most owners opting for the latter) and at the other end of the scale, Toyota is testing a manual gearbox for electric vehicles. In-between (though still very much at the expensive end of the scale) we have these two: the £1m Aston Martin Valour and the £231k Porsche 911 S/T. The Valour pairs a manual gearbox with Aston’s twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12 for the first time, and those mechanicals are clothed in retro-inspired carbonfibre bodywork. Just 110 will be made, at £1m-plus each. As for the Porsche, you can look at it either as a 911 GT3 RS with a manual gearbox and without that wing, or as a GT3 Touring with the wick turned up. Either way, it marries an epic engine that revs to 9,000rpm, with a manual ‘box and lightweight clutch. There’s still life in the ol’ stick shift then! Weighing just 1,070kg, the Revolucion has a 6.0l V12 with 789hp and 538lb ft, so 50hp and 14lb ft over the predecessor, the Zonda R. The gearbox allows changes in just 20ms, 0-62mph is 2.7s and the top speed tips 217mph - pretty impressive performance stats. The Pagani Zonda Revolucion costs €2.2 million before taxes, that makes for a value of £2.3m in the UK. Positioned as the "son of Valkyrie," this car has a lot to live up to. But does it actually bridge the gap between the supercar world and the million-pound hypercar elite? Mat’s flown over to Spain to dive deep and see if this British beast has the soul of a racer or the manners of a road car. So let’s take a closer look, starting with the exterior design… From the outside, there’s no denying that the Valhalla is a masterclass in aerodynamics. At the front, you’ll find huge vents that actually expose the car’s suspension, giving it a proper race car feel. The sides are dominated by aggressive strakes and complex aero channels that guide air toward that massive roof scoop. At the back, things get even wilder with twin top-exit exhaust pipes, a gargantuan rear diffuser, and an active wing that keeps the car glued to the tarmac. Step inside, and the Valhalla has a proper hypercar feel. There’s a pair of carbon fibre bucket seats, and these are surrounded by more carbon fibre as well as high-quality materials throughout. There are two screens - a digital driver’s display and an infotainment screen. The software is relatively basic, but then again, that’s in keeping with most other hypercars. If you’re looking for storage, though, you’ll need to pack light! There’s no boot or glovebox, and only minimal storage within the cabin! Under the skin lies a serious powertrain. The Valhalla uses an AMG-derived 4-litre twin-turbo V8, but Aston has gone to town on it with new pistons, camshafts, and significantly larger turbos. There are also two electric motors - both positioned on either side of the front axel, to offer Four Wheel Drive. The engine and motors combined deliver a staggering 1080hp and 1100Nm of torque, along with a claimed 0-60mph time of 2.5 seconds. Exclusivity like this doesn't come cheap. The Aston Martin Valhalla starts at approximately £800,000, though once you start playing with the options list, most owners will be looking at a final bill closer to £1,000,000. So, is it worth the seven-figure price tag? And does it belong hypercar status, or is it simply a very expensive supercar? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!     • Famously, Ayrton Senna drove a Honda NSX-R round Suzuka in white socks and loafers, so in this latest TDS episode, Henry Catchpole does his best to pay tribute to that iconic footage. He also investigates how a car with only 276HP can stand toe-to-toe with the very best supercars ever made. And it really can. This particular NSX-R is one of the far rarer second generation from 2002. It has just 16,000km on the clock and is coming up for auction with Broad Arrow at the Villa d’Este concours at the end of May. Resplendent in Championship white with the red Recaro carbon bucket seats and simple three-spoke Momo steering wheel inside, it is in pretty much perfect spec. The legendary NSX ergonomics seem to be even better in the R and as soon as you get in you feel right at home. It is an incredibly tactile car to drive, with a fabulously tight, precise gear shift and talkative unassisted steering that are both full of feel from the moment you set off. Also playing an integral part in the experience is the naturally aspirated, 90-degree V6, C32B engine. It might only have 276bhp and 224lb ft of torque but it somehow feels like enough in a car that only weighs 2800lb (1270kg). When let loose around the cambered curves of Sweden’s Gelleråsen arena it is something close to driving Nirvana, with incredible poise and no lack of performance. The circuit, also known as Karlskoga Motorstadion, is Sweden’s oldest permanent motorsport track and as Henry explains, it has witnessed some interesting races in its history.     • Ferrari has finally presented the new Daytona SP3, part of the series of exclusive Icona models and will be marketed towards the end of 2022. We are at the Mugello circuit during the final day, Sunday, where the 2021 Ferrari Finali Mondiali took place. In the video, you can see the car at its first public appearance, which completed a couple of laps on the track. The design is a tribute to the legendary Ferrari 330 P3, 330 P3/4 and 412 P, which extraordinarily were there too and honoured the public all together with a superb parade. The new SP3 will be produced in 599 units at the cost of 2 million euros and is powered by the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine capable of developing 840hp at 9,500 rpm. With a weight of 1485 kg, the performances are very high; from 0 to 100 Km/h in 2.85 seconds, from 0 to 200 Km/h in 7.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 340 Km/h.
