    • Shot and edited by: Oli Kosbab Present by: Matt Prior The Ferrari F8 Spider is the open-topped variant of Ferrari's latest mid-engined V8 supercar - a cara named after its engine - the F8 Tributo. The 3.9-litre twin turbocharged V8 that arrived in the Ferrari 488 GTB has won a lot of awards, you see. So when they introduced that car's replacement, they named the car after it. And then, as is Ferrari's way, it took the roof off to make a Spider, and this is it. The F8 Spider still has that 3.9-litre V8, making 710bhp and 568lb ft of torque, which is good enough to make it go from 0-60mph in 2.9sec and onto a top speed of 211mph. Which should be plenty, even though this car carries a 70kg penalty over the coupe. But what else, if anything, do you gain by having a roofless version of the F8? We headed to the Netherlands to drive the Donkervoort D8 GTO-JD70, a long name for a small car that has spectacular performance. Company founder Joop Donkervoort started his business importing Lotus, then Caterham, 7s. But he had to modify them slightly so they could be sold legally in continental Europe. He ended up producing his own car and he hasn't stopped creating since. This is his company's latest model: the Donkervoort D8 GTO-JD70, made to celebrate his 70th birthday. It's wild: it has a 415bhp Audi 5-cylinder engine under the hood, on Nankang track day tyres it's said to be able to corner at 2G. It's beautifully put together, has a top speed of 174mph, can do 0-62mph in a claimed 2.7sec and costs, including taxes, some £176,000 in the UK.   • Mercedes C111 Nardo World record drive 1976
    • So although it would never be allowed to cruise the country lanes and boulevards, the C 111 would go on to make its mark on the world’s test circuits. By 1973 the growing importance of fuel-efficient engines had become clear, not least as a result of the oil crisis, presenting good opportunities for thrifty diesels. In an attempt to disprove the compression-ignition engine’s reputation as loud and lacking dynamism, the test department fitted the C 111-II with a three-litre five-cylinder diesel engine. Now known internally as the C 111-II D, the test vehicle used turbocharging and intercooling systems to produce 140 kW (190 hp) from the OM 617 LA production engine (59 kW/80 hp) taken from the 240 D 3.0 of the W 115 series (“Stroke Eight”). In June 1976 the C 111-II D delivered a convincing performance on the test circuit at Nardò in Italy: over the space of 60 hours, four drivers set 16 world records, among them 13 for diesel vehicles and three for cars with any type of engine. Their average speed was 252 km/h – proving that a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine is also more than capable of sprinting. #c111 #diesel #nardo #oldbenz

The elegant walnut facia and deep wood veneer door cappings really have defied age thanks to dry garage storage. The comprehensive range of instruments, controls and switches are all functional except for the electric clock. Comfort and support is guaranteed with wide front fully adjustable seats. The boot area is spotlessly clean with an unbroken plywood support. Remarkably factory correct in all respects. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION The jewel in this model is the powerful 1998cc slant 4 engine with 16 valves, cross flow ports, aluminium cylinder head and twin SU carbs. Maximum power is quoted at 127bhp with 0-60mph despatched in 9.2 seconds and a M.I.R.A recorded 116mph top speed. Comprehensive invoices will reassure the next custodian with regards to the mechanical upkeep and correct operation. The sturdy 4-speed transmission with working overdrive is light, precise and a delight to use. EXTERIOR This incredibly rare Fiesta Supersport is finished in optional Strato Silver, (Code V 6), and demonstrates a brilliant shine of a cherished, perfectly stored car. Knowledgeable scrutineers will be amazed how this fragile car has survived in the correct Ford production guise with factory original panels throughout. Unique to the Supersport, one bolt bumper mounts in the correctly sized recess, supplements the known bulged rear valence to accommodate the spare alloy wheel in the boot area. Date stampings in hidden areas remain and production spot-welds even extend to both sills! Correct Hella halogen headlights and Ford twin driving lamps remain fitted and the decals are original factory fitted and not reproduction items. They have been clear lacquered. The glass is number plate etched with the rear screen displaying the supplying dealer sticker. Both the screen sticker and front and rear number plates are original items and not reproduction. Amazing. INTERIOR Mollycoddled will help explain why the reclining front seats finished in Savannah and Carla Supersport Red fabric, (Code K1), are still original items from new. Never subject to a retrim and still in amazing condition they will be the envy of all Fast Ford fans. The soft feel instrument panel is free from cracks and the 4-spoke steering wheel and sports gearshift knob are perfect. All gauges and illuminated switchgear are in working order and there is minor wear to the driver’s window winder and passenger door top. The boot area displays all the hallmarks of an untampered vehicle from the genuine carpeted rear package tray to the blue scribed numbers on the boot floor written in March 1981 when the car was produced. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION The Kent 2V engine, (KL13G), code J3E with 1297cc produces 66PS and is uncharacteristically quiet thanks to documented owner maintenance entries. Beautifully detailed with Ford leads, cables and Motocraft service items the exhibitionist will be thrilled at the cleanliness and production correct attributes. The Mk1 bodyplate in conjunction with chassis plate is easily reproduced but is correctly mounted and original in this car with codes unique to the Supersport proudly on display for the knowledgeable to cross reference. The 4-speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift operates correctly. WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES Correct Ford 4-spoke 13 X 6 alloys wheels with the black centre caps are stunning with two tiny marks to the front only. Amazingly, Pirelli P6 185/60 R13 tyres are still fitted including the spare which although have ample tread would be advised to change and keep should the car be regularly used. The dual line servo assisted brakes with 8.7” front discs and 7.0” rear drums bring the car up to a steady halt. HISTORY FILE Registered new on 4th August 1981 by Ford Main Dealers, South Essex Motors (SEM), to Mr Gregory of Wickford. His long term ownership is best described as fastidious with a 1981 diary revealing the mileage at every fuel stop and when and what maintenance works were carried out. This log covers 46 pages of hand written entries up to 78,687 miles and the mileage is now 84,307. The condition, without exception, reflects a cossetted ownership partly revealed by the diary and in the perfect originality of the car itself. In the care of some very high profile Ford collectors since and now ready for the next custodian. A SEM wallet containing all the Ford handbooks remains with the car. Two sets of Ford keys, with the metal key tag number, fits all locks and the ignition. Representing a fantastic element of Ford’s historic sporting pedigree, this hugely collectable model has become virtually impossible to source in such an unmolested, preserved and original condition.   • The Ferrari Testarossa was a 23-year-long mistake — ISSIMI Spotlight feat. Jason Cammisa — Ep. 06
    • Some things don't go the way they're planned. We often call them "mistakes." But some of the best things have come from unplanned events, miscalculations, or aberrations: the Ferrari Testarossa, the Post-It note, and even Jason Cammisa. We asked his mom. Jason was a mistake. Doesn't make him less of a Jason. And the Testarossa, despite its huge commercial success, was part of a lineage of Ferraris which was, in retrospect, compromised at its mission. Ferrari, perhaps caving to the en-vogue mid-engine fad of the late 1960s and early 1970s, ushered his 12-cylinder GT cars away from their successful front-engine layout. For the 365 GT/4 BB, Ferrari splayed the Daytona's V-12 to 180 degrees and mounted it the middle of a body so sultry that its creators nicknamed it "BB," after Brigitte Bardot. Ferrari's press office had to make up a story about BB, and called it the Berlinetta Boxer — but of course this Berlinetta never had a Boxer engine. (Ferrari insiders confirmed this BB story to us.) The press railed on the BB for not being a usable car, and so it was replaced with the Testarossa, which gained 6 inches in width that allowed the cooling system to be moved to the rear of the car. This addressed the media's complaints about the heat-soaked cabin. Despite its enormity, the Testarossa became one of the most successful Ferrari models ever. Its 1980s cocaine-snorting image doesn't quite line up with the valium-popping driving experience, but the Testarossa was a magnificent luxuxry car. Great, just not what you'd expect. Its replacement, the 512 TR, sharpened many of the rounded edges and made it halfway back to the magnificent 365 BB's driving experience, but without the drawbacks. After 23 years, Enzo had left us, and the mid-engined 12-cylinder GT was retired by new boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who realized the middle-motor concept was probably best left for the sports cars. The flat-12 lineage ended, and the Ferrari GT returned to its front-engine roots with the 550 Maranello. The Testarossa is the middle-child in a two-decade series of cars between the 365 GT/4 BB, BB 512, and BB 512i; and then the 512 TR and 512 M.   • This Alfa Romeo Spider Is A Well-Oiled Multitool

This week we bring you some stills from our film shoot with Petrolicious’ Director of Marketing Andrew Poole and his 1974 Alfa Romeo Spider. Finished in a vibrant coat of Verde Inglese (the Italians’ take on British Racing Green) this convertible isn’t just for sauntering around town looking pretty as the sun pours in. Of course the little Italian beauty is happy to absorb the admiration of passersby, but the car’s swept-back stature, long unbroken belt lines, and endearingly eager fascia take care of that handily on their own, for radiating charm in a parking space doesn’t require chassis bracing and a worked-over motor. The tight cockpit and massive dome of visibility afforded by the absent roof can offer an ideal view of a quaint little town being explored in first gear, but it’s also perfectly suited to this car’s Mr. Hyde side, in this case providing better views of the gaps between slower cars. After adding an aura of authenticity to a morning espresso run, the little Alfa is ready to escape the bustle of population and find a place to indulge in its capabilities. This is no standard Spider after all. In addition to chassis stiffening and suspension tweaks, the car also houses a motor that’s received an abundance of upgrades, including hot cams and a dual Weber carburetors. Prepared by Petrolista and self-proclaimed Alfa Romeo nut (he does have at least 20 at any given time it seems) Manuel Minassian, the motor is both ready and asking to be used properly. In the film featuring his car, “This Alfa Romeo Spider Is A Well-Oiled Multitool,” Andrew proves that its potency lies not just in the ability to draw a gaze. Gone is the doughy body roll, and in its place a level of poise and nimbleness begging for a set of switchbacks. The power output has been upped accordingly, turning this car into a form of the classic “sleeper,” only this is a car that’s always looked the part. Indulging in the benefits of his tasteful modifications, Andrew grabs the car by the scruff of its neck as the two tear through the dust and beckoning emptiness of Southern Californian desert on their way to the world-renowned dry lakebed of El Mirage. Following a day of lewd manners—and from such a pretty little thing!—the Alfa’s streamlined form is caked with geologic levels of dust and dirt. With a dual-purpose car like this one’s ability to deliver such a wide range of enjoyment, it’s only right to treat it well in return. While it was certainly fun acquiring the coating of prehistoric dust, Andrew’s use of Turtle Wax ICE Wash & Wax and Power Out Carpet Cleaner makes swift work of restoring the Spider to its showroom glory. As an obsessive gearhead with some engineering background to boot, it seemed Martin Buckley was a young man destined to spin wrenches for a living—but he had different plans. “I went down that road a little bit, but being a mechanic didn’t seem to have anything to do with liking cars. It was almost about hating them,” Martin reflects. “There was nothing glamorous about it at all. I wanted the sexy part of it.” So, Martin took an unusual but highly rewarding route in turning cars into another career: writing about them. Jokingly referring to his self-proclaimed “Motoring Connoisseur” title, Martin wrote his first piece for Classic and Sports Car magazine at age 16. The topic? The then new and now iconic BMW E9 coupe, which Martin admits was the car he was “completely obsessed with at the time.” Understandable. Ever since then, Martin has been wholeheartedly committed to motoring magazines and professional automotive journalism, ranging from Classic and Sports Car to EVO, Autocar to Top Gear. His dedication to the car crazy wordsmith craft has paid off, too. With an assorted collection stabled in his automobilia-plastered garage, Martin has, as one might guess, a widespread appreciation for all types of automobiles. His passion for petrol is vast, but he does have a soft spot for the quirky but clever, funky but charming, NSU Ro 80. “I do remember seeing them on the road as a kid,” Martin remarks on the Wankel-whirling Ro 80, “Even in the ‘70s and ‘80s, it still looked futuristic, and it somehow still looks futuristic now.” Martin first purchased this NSU a decade ago. It was a decent original driver with sunbaked paint and a neglected powertrain. Within an hour of having it home, Martin and a friend were able to get the rotary revolving again after just minimal maintenance. After going through the rest of the drivetrain, Martin secured an MOT and sold the car to a friend… who eventually sold it back to Martin. As a second-time owner, Martin felt inclined to do the slick sedan justice by treating it to a fresh coat of paint. Now shining brightly and mechanically sound as well, Martin is free to enjoy what he loves most about these cars: driving them. It’d be easy to make excuses to only occasionally use such a rare machine, considering all the nonexistent replacement parts not so readily available, but this auto journo doesn’t care. “I think people get worried about things they don't need to get worried about.
