That’s not say that it’s not good. Far from it. The DBX is excellent, succeeding on pretty much every front; space, comfort, luxury, performance and capability. What’s unremarkable about it is that we have seen it all before. The DBX does not re-invent the performance SUV, rather it has carefully selected a slot in the market place - in this case right in between the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus - and made a car that fits right in that gap. It has comparable levels of luxury and performance as both and competes on the practicalities such as space and efficiency. It’s not as soft and plush as the Betayga nor as track focussed and unhinged as the Urus, rather sampling a little from both. DBX will undoubtedly be an excellent addition to the ever growing collection of these kinds of rides but it’s not the fastest or the most luxurious. It might turn out to be the best handling, but until we’ve driving it the final version on our own terms it’s difficult to say. But it certainly will be able to hold its head up amongst the usual suspects, all offering their version of the same product and if history repeats itself - which it is inclined to do - the DBX could be a runaway success. There was nothing about my brief time with he car that made me think it would do anything less. It better be too because if it’s not Aston Martin may once again need to be rescued by an individual with some money in the bank who might then lend their initials to the next generation of Astons. LS perhaps? The DBX has the same turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 out of the Vantage but with some new features including cylinder shut-off technology to suit those more sedate driving situations. There is still 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque available though, so don’t for a moment think this car is anything less than fast. Despite the nearly 5000-pound kerb weight the DBX can get to 60mph in 4.3 seconds and will take you all the way up to 181mph if you let it. The suspension, which has double wishbones at the front and multi-link at the rear as well as active dampers combined with a 48-volt anti-roll system gives Aston Martin an astonishing breadth of possibilities when it comes to ride and handling with the DBX. Although the exact final production settings of all of these was still being dialled in, the possibilities range from ultra stiff to sea-faring vessel. The range on offer in the driving modes I had access to - and undoubtedly what the final result will have - were pretty much in the sweet spot for both comfort at speed and yet communicative and lively when being thrown around. In the firmest Sports Plus mode the body roll is no more than you’d expect from an Aston Martin sports car. Which isn’t to say none, there is still a modicum of roll which is actually both welcome and beneficial to help feel the weight of the car moving around under load. In the standard driving mode the DBX handles open roads as well as gravel tracks perfectly well soaking up bumps while keeping composed under in corners. I certainly had no concern pushing the car to the limits of my driving ability on and off-road. Unlike in most other modern Astons the driving modes are fixed. Rather than dealing in the engine and transmission with one button and the suspension with another, prescribed modes are now selectable alongside an individual mode which allows for some, but not complete customisation. The DBX is aimed at a far wider, perhaps less tech savvy audience and these simplified driving modes are evidence of that. In addition the DBX is the first Aston to have been developed with help from a female advisory group that made key recommendations to ensure that the car appealed to woman as well as men. Although it was made explicitly clear to me that this not the “ladies’ Aston”, merely that the DBX is considering the widest possible customer base. The acceleration on offer belies the weight of the DBX and the large steel brakes are more than up to the task of scrubbing all that speed off again. The all-weather tyres this prototype had fitted had no problem with tackling loose gravel and even with the traction control fully on there was more than enough opportunity to play around with the limits of grip. My time with the car was only enough for cursory glance at what the final car will be like to drive but I can with a high degree of certainty say this - The DBX is unremarkable.

  • The Last Dance: Audi R8 GT RWD | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat
    • The Audi R8 GT RWD is the swan song for the four-ringed super sportscar. It is a very fitting finale too, because it encapsulates so much of what has made the R8 special throughout its 20 year history. Since the original concept car designed by Frank Lamberty back in 2003, the R8 has captured people’s imaginations and changed the perception of fast Audi road cars. In this latest episode of The Driver’s Seat on the Hagerty YouTube channel, Henry Catchpole takes a journey back through the Audi R8 story. He looks at the car’s outstanding attributes, which include everything from usability, to laser lights, to a predilection for oversteer. However, he also shines a light on some of the less well-known aspects of the R8 story. Did you know, for example, that there was a diesel version of the R8? Or that the LMS version raced successfully for more than 24 hours? And do you know where the R8 name came from? With the help of Tom Kristensen we reveal that at the end of the film - a big thank you to Martin Halusa and Peter Chambers Automotive for their generosity and assistance with that part. The R8 GT RWD itself is magnificent. Its 5.2-litre, naturally aspirated V10 puts out 611bhp and 417lb ft of torque. That makes it the most powerful rear-wheel drive R8 ever. It also has shorter gearing for its 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox, helping it to sprint to 62mph from rest in just 3.4sec. It will still hit 199mph too. Lighter, forged alloys are also part of the package, along with a system called Torque Rear (which is a bit like McLaren’s Variable Drift Control). All in all, the R8 GT RWD highlights just what a spectacular car we are losing. A go in an original R8 V8 with a beautiful open-gate manual also highlights just what a bargain they are in the used market. Will we one day see an e-Tron, all-electric version of an R8?     • The Bentley Continental GT is a grand tourer produced by British automaker Bentley Motors since 2003. It was the first car released by Bentley under Volkswagen AG-management after their acquisition of the company in 1998, and the first ever Bentley to employ "mass production" manufacturing techniques. It shares a platform with the Volkswagen Phaeton. Early models include a choice of 6 body colours (Diamond Black, Burnt Oak, Cypress, Neptune, Spruce, and Umbrian Red), 8 hide colours (Beluga, Burnt Oak, Laurel, Nautic, Portland, Saffron, Savannah, Saddle), 5 veneer types (Burr Oak, Burr Walnut, Dark Stained Walnut, Madrona, Piano Black), 4 carpet and seatbelt colours (Beluga, Burnt Oak, Laurel, Nautic).[7] Mulliner Driving Specification includes 20-inch 2-piece 7-spoke alloy sports wheels with bespoke Advan Sport 275/35 R20 tyres, drilled alloy sports foot pedals and footrest, gear lever finished in knurled chrome and hide, two-tone leather and veneer combinations, diamond quilted hide to facings, doors and rear quarter panels; Embroidered 'Bentley' marque emblem to seat facings, indented hide headlining, dark-stained Burr Walnut or Piano black veneer. The Flying Spur has a 6-litre, 12-cylinder engine, configured in a W formation. Continental GTC, GTC Speed 80-11 Editions (2010-)[edit] The 80-11 models are limited (80 units per model) versions of Continental GTC and GTC Speed for North American market, with 20-inch 14-spoke alloy diamond wheels polished with unique black center caps featuring Bentley 'B' emblem (GTC) or 20-inch wheels from Supersports finished in dark tint with red brake calipers (GTC Speed), Union Jack brightware badges on front fenders, exclusive Midnight body colour option, Dark Grey Metallic soft top and the Mulliner fuel-filler cap as standard, Beluga main leather hide with white (GTC) or Pillar Box Red (GTC Speed) contrast stitching and piping and Bentley emblems, Piano Black veneers, engine-turned aluminum with bright (GTC) or dark (GTC Speed) finish, drilled alloy sport foot pedals, treadplates and a badge on the console with the '80-11 Edition' signature. Available in coupe and convertible bodies, they are versions of Bentley Continental GT V8 with increased engine power to 528 PS (388 kW; 521 hp)@6000rpm and 680 N·m (502 lb·ft)@1700rpm, increased agility and body control to match the engine's higher output, lowered suspension through an aerodynamic front splitter, discrete side sills and rear diffuser in Beluga gloss black; new exclusive 20-inch wheels with open-spoke design, red-painted brake calipers, optional new sports exhaust, optional duo-tone interiors, choice of interior trim in seventeen hide colours, unique contrast centre stripe for the hide-trimmed roof lining matching the colour of the main hide, knurled chrome detailing to the gearshift lever and ventilation controls, Piano Black veneers, 'V8 S' on each sill tread plate. The vehicle was unveiled in 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show,[92] followed by 2014 North American International Auto Show,[93] 2014 Beijing International Automotive Show,[94] 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.[91] Press reviews began in the UK market in April, 2014.[95] The vehicles were set to arrive in Bentley dealerships from early 2014.[96][97] 2014 Continental GT update, Continental GT Speed (2014-)[edit] Changes to 2014 Continental GT includes the debut of seven distinctive equipment packages. Premier Specification includes additional technology and comfort whilst the Interior Style Specification uses the very best of Bentley hand-craftsmanship for the ultimate tailored cabin. Continental GT Speed includes increased engine power to 635 PS (467 kW; 626 hp) and 820 N·m (605 lb·ft), red-painted brake calipers, a chrome 'Speed' badge at front fenders, a new exclusive colour split. Mulliner Styling Specification for GT Speed includes front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser in body colour; 21-inch Speed wheel design, headlamps, tail lamps in dark tint.     • The birth of the dodge viper was conceived in 1988 when Bob Lutz (head of Chrysler Corporation's Global Product Development, at the time) and Carroll Shelby (Famed car designer & Race car icon) were talking about designing a car that matched the 1960's muscle car and the 1990's technology. Carroll Shelby and Bob Lutz used the Cobra as a source of inspiration with the two seat design, powerful engine, minimalist straightforward design, muscular and aggressive styling, and high performance. In 1989 the Dodge Viper appeared as a concept at the North American International Auto show in Detroit. The public reaction to this concept car had car enthusiast such as the president of the German Ferrari Club asking to place his order for one. Lee Iacocca was there for the launch of the Dodge Viper in April 1992 and was quoted as saying "If this doesn't excite you check your pulse cause you're not well today". The Dodge Viper was not just a hit in America it made the cover of Six European Magazines during its concept tours with the Auto Show circuit.     • The BMW M8 Competition Coupe is Germany’s latest luxury sports car. Costing £125,000 in the UK and with 616bhp of power it’s a fast, four wheel drive four seater that can get from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds. But here it faces very silly competition, in the form of the Ford Mustang CS800, from UK tuner Sutton Bespoke. With a huge supercharger on its 5.0 V8 engine it makes as much as 825bhp and will get from 0-60mph in, we estimate, around 4.0 seconds and on to a top speed of around 180mph. It costs from £63,000 but here it costs £105,000 as tested, which puts it on a natural par with the BMW M8 Competition. So which is better, faster, more desirable? Whereas the Z8 used the E39 M5's V8 engine, the Alpina uses a stroked version of the 540i engine, with an automatic rather than a manual transmission.     • The Borgward Isabella is an automobile which was manufactured by the Bremen based auto-manufacturer Carl F. W. Borgward GmbH from 1954 to 1962. The Isabella was to have been marketed as the Borgward Hansa 1500 but the Isabella name was used on test vehicles and proved popular with engineering staff and media. The production car was subsequently renamed and only the first few hundred examples were built without Isabella badging. Hansa badging was also used through to 1957. Despite its aspirational positioning in the marketplace, the Isabella had a smaller engine (and was marginally shorter) than its immediate predecessor, the Borgward Hansa. Late in 1952, the firm had launched their six cylinder Hansa 2400 model. The larger car never found many buyers; but in 1954, it made commercial sense to keep the two models from competing too directly with each other.

    • The brand new McLaren 765LT has landed, and where better to head for a first drive than on track at Silverstone! Join me to discover the new supercar inside out with a full walkaround, run through of all the details, and an opportunity to push it and experience what it's all about. The McLaren 765LT dials up the 2nd generation of the Super Series by taking the 720S, removing 80kg of weight, adding 45hp, new aero for plenty more downforce, and reconfigures the car to really be at home on the race track. Leaning from the big-brother, McLaren Senna, the 765LT is born to be driven on circuit and that's exactly what we're able to do for a first drive at Silverstone, the home of the British F1 Grand Prix. The numbers speak for themselves; there will be 765 units of the Coupe, weighing in at just 1,229kg with a 4l twin turbo V8 making 765hp and 800Nm, good for 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 2.8s and 0-200km/h (124mph) in a mere 7.0s on its way to a top speed of 330km/h (205mph). The changes also extending to the setup of the gearbox with shorter ratios for a feeling of constantly being in the power band, revised suspension for even further improved handling on track, and a more dynamic feel thanks to the exhaust system and tuning. In full Track Package spec, the 765LT features the titanium roll cage with harnesses, the Senna bucket seats (saving 18kg) and Pirelli Trofeo R tyres. Additional weight savings vs the 720S come in the form of carbon fibre body panels for 14kg, new forged wheels and titanium bolts for 22kg, and deleting the optional air conditioning for 10kg, amongst others. While the weather is doing its best to give a great British representation for the new British supercar, let's not let the cold, wind and rain spoil the fun, as the cars are equipped with Pzero tyres for the conditions on the International Circuit layout. After an introduction to the car its time to get a feel for what it's all about before taking a further look through the interior in detail. It's undeniably fast, with brilliant steering, turn in and suspension feel, but perhaps most intriguingly has quite a different character to the Senna itself. The straight line speed feeling is a match but the car is more playful and adventurous as opposed to the brutal outright lap times chased by the Senna at a greater expense of entertainment. Next stop, to drive it on the road, and get some Trofeo Rs on for some dry laps!     • The car in this video is completely original. Even the paint is original. The GTV-6,came in a version of the GTV with the SOHC V6 2.5 L engine from the Alfa 6 luxury sedan, As a result the hood received a bulge to clear the top of the intake and became its most pronounced feature. With Bosch fuel injection instead of the six downdraught Dell'Orto carburettors in the early Alfa 6 installation, the V6 was much easier to start and retained its state of tune much better. The V6 received rave reviews from the motoring press, which had previously lambasted the same engine in the Alfa 6 because of the carburettor problems. The fuel injection installation eventually made it into the second series of the Alfa 6 as well. The GTV went through a number of revisions, including a new gear ratios and an updated interior in 1984.
