    • Ken Block and Ford Motor Company’s exclusive partnership has brought in some real hardware over the past decade in rally and rallycross. 19 race wins plus 17 other podium finishes, 2 X Games medals, well over a billion video views across Block’s social media platforms, and the first ever World Rally Championship points scored for the brand by an American driver. As of January 2021, that exclusivity comes to an end, with Block becoming a free agent. And that means his options behind the wheel are now wide open. “Working with Ford over the past decade has been awesome.” says Ken Block. “From racing all over the world, to accumulating a half billion views from Gymkhana THREE to Gymkhana TEN, to creating the Emmy nominated series The Gymkhana Files for Amazon Prime - along with building a fleet of Fords including the iconic AWD Mustang Hoonicorn and F-150 Hoonitruck - it’s been a great partnership. He took the overall win at Rally Barbados in a WRC2 Ford Fiesta, won his class (and 3rd overall) at Rally Legend in San Marino in his Ford Escort Cossie V2, and also won the first ever Projekt E race of the FIA World RallyCross Championship in Holjes, Sweden, in a Ford Fiesta. Along with winning races, Block and Hoonigan launched the all-new viral video series,- Hoonicorn Vs The World. Spanning 11 episodes, the series features Ken racing his 1965 Ford Mustang RTR Hoonicorn against a variety of wild vehicles including a McLaren Senna and the World’s Fastest Donk. The series has been viewed over 34 million times since its launch in late November. What does the next chapter have in store?   • Mercedes Vision EQXX über 1000 Kilometer mit nur einer Akku Ladung Electric Drive Mitfahrt
    • Jungfernfahrt nach zwei Jahren Entwicklungs- und Bauzeit. Und dann eine überzeugende Performance abgeliefert. Alle Beteiligten an dem Mercedes-Projekt Vision EQXX hatten am Abend des 5. April jeden Grund, in Jubelstürme auszubrechen. Denn: der straßenzugelassene Elektrowagen mit dem Kennzeichen S-QE 1010E war 1008 Kilometer von Sindelfingen über Zürich, Mailand, Genua, Nizza bis nach Cassis, das Hafenstädtchen bei Marseille, unterwegs, ohne ein einziges Mal nachzuladen. Der Vision EQXX wäre mit der Energie der knapp 100 kWh großen Batterie mit einer Nennspannung von 900 Volt und einem Gewicht von 495 Kilogramm sogar noch 140 Kilometer weiter gekommen. Der Ladestand des Akkus, der um etwa ein Drittel kleiner als der im Mercedes EQS ist, zeigt bei der Ankunft noch 15 Prozent an. Unterm Strich ergab sich damit ein Verbrauch von 8,7 kWh/100 km bei einer gefahrenen Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 87 Kilometer pro Stunde. Die echte Fahrzeit lag bei elf Stunden und 32 Minuten. Zwölf Stunden und zwei Minuten waren es insgesamt, wenn die Zeit der Fahrerwechsel mit eingerechnet wird. Angetrieben wird das 4,98 Meter lange, 1,87 Meter breite und 1,35 Meter hohe Rekord-Elektroauto mit einem Radstand von 2,80 Metern von einem 180 kW (245 PS) starken E-Motor. Um jeglicher Diskussion vorzubeugen, erfolgte die Langstreckenfahrt mit versiegelter Ladesteckdose und wurde von einem unabhängigen Sachverständigen des TÜV Süd begleitet. Das Streckenprofil – von Autobahnetappen in Deutschland bis Tempo 140 bis hin zu Bergpassagen und Baustellen – und die Wetterbedingungen stellten das gerade einmal 1.755 Kilogramm schwere Auto vor ziemliche Herausforderungen. Die Temperaturspanne reichte von nur drei Grad Celsius bei der Abfahrt am Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum in Sindelfingen bis zu 18 Grad Celsius am Ziel. Nördlich der Alpen regnete es leicht und weiter südlich wehte bei Sonnenschein ein leichter Wind. Möglich war diese Rekordfahrt nur, weil vom ersten Moment der Entwicklung an alles auf höchstmögliche Effizienz ausgelegt wurde. Jede Schraube, jede Verbindung, jedes noch so kleine Detail musste sich einer solchen Prüfung unterziehen. Die Summe dieser Maßnahmen, an der Spezialisten aus allen Bereichen bis hin zur Formel-1-Abteilung des Konzerns in Großbritannien beteiligt waren, ergab schließlich einen geradezu sensationellen cW-Wert von 0,17. Das haben bisher nur Fahrzeuge mit komplett oder zumindest teilweise verkleideten Radhäusern sowie extrem gezeichneter Karosserie erreicht. Gut, auch der Mercedes Vision EQXX hat sicherlich kein Mainstream-Design. Doch wer auf bestmögliche Aerodynamik aus ist, muss gewisse Kompromisse eingehen. So bietet das Auto mit der weltbesten Aerodynamik unter Fahrzeugen mit Straßenzulassung dem Wind kaum eine Angriffsfläche. Dazu trägt die Grundform der Karosserie mit der geringen Stirnfläche von 2,12 Quadratmetern ebenso bei wie die glattflächige Kuppel des Greenhouse und die wie ein Wassertropfen nach hinten fließende Linie bei. Einen großen Vorteil in Sachen geringer Luftwiderstand bringt die verringerte hintere Spurbreite. Die hinteren Reifen rollen quasi im Windschatten der Vorderräder. Die neue Reifendimension 185/65 R 20 97 T steht zudem für einen großen Durchmesser bei schmaler Lauffläche. Darüber hinaus wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Aerodynamik-Team von Mercedes-Benz der Strömungsübergang vom Reifen, der mit mehr als drei bar Druck gefahren wurde, zur aus Magnesium gefertigten Felge optimiert. Die Aufdrucke auf den Reifen sind ins Material eingelassen, dass nicht die kleinste Erhöhung zu fühlen ist. Ein aktiver Heckdiffusor, der bei Tempo 60 automatisch erst ein wenig nach unten, dann um 200 Millimeter nach hinten ausfährt, sorgt außerdem für eine bessere Luftführung und trägt somit maßgeblich zum verminderten Luftwiderstand bei. Wir hatten die Chance, wenige Tage nach der Ankunft in Südfrankreich etwa 20 Kilometer auf dem Beifahrerplatz mit dem Vision EQXX chauffiert zu werden. Eines wird dabei auf Anhieb klar. Ein Verzichtsauto ist das Fahrzeug nicht. Zwar sind die hinteren Türen trotz der beiden eingebauten Sitze nur Show, lassen sich nicht öffnen. Doch vorne ist es bequem, es gibt viel Platz und das Panel des Armaturenträgers entpuppt sich als riesiges und überaus informatives Display, das von A-Säule zu A-Säule reicht. Selbst Windrichtung, Windstärke und Luftströmung am Auto sind zu sehen. Der Wagen segelt auf der Autobahn, als gebe es dauernd Rückenwind, das Fahrwerk lässt auch flotte Kurvenfahrten zu und der Antritt ist hammerhart wie bei jedem E-Auto. Bei kühlen Temperaturen am frühen Morgen losgefahren und mit einigen Zwischensprints zeigte der Bordcomputer auf der Taxifahrt glatte neun kWh an.   • The BMW 850CSi Is Still The Ultimate Dream Car
    • Join us this week as we venture into the plush leather seats of the ultimate retro techno-toy: BMW’s 8-Series. In order to pay proper tribute to the veritable king of rapid luxury, we’ve tracked down Taylor Patterson’s pristine example of the line-topping, limited-production 850CSi. While BMW was revealed to have been making a bonafide go at an M8 variant of the big grand touring coupe back in the early ‘90s—and in fact the company’s sole box-flared beast of a prototype still exists, complete with carbon-fiber wheel covers—that car never made it to the masses, or at least to that portion with the taste and means to acquire such a car that would have likely carried an MSRP somewhere in the Ferrari territory it was aimed at. Luckily for those people though (and for the second and third and fourth owners), M still left some incriminating fingerprints on the 8-Series, and as with most stews stirred by its hand, the result was an unmatched vessel of prowess that they simply called the 850CSi. At the time of its reveal in 1992, the peer group for this car was almost nonexistent, and on a more abstract scale, there have been very few in its wake to attempt a similar blend of substance and poise. It never claimed to be a sporty coupe, yet it could outperform many of them. The car’s true domain however was a lengthy trip with the room to show off how comfortable 100+MPH can be; this was the kind of car whose essence was understated, yet its presence never went unnoticed. Though any form of the E31 chassis was and is a genuine rarity, the CSi stood even further apart. At the time, this was the end-all, be-all, the award-winning stew of a high-tech ecosystem paired to a taut motor that could push the impressive package well past the imposed safety speed threshold of 155 MPH. Further boosting the desirability of the CSi model was the inclusion of special staggered forged M-System wheels with the distinctive “throwing star” bladed covers, a more robust and direct suspension, extra interior options, and a host of upgrades to the exterior paneling, as is the fashion for cars with the M treatment. It was a truly special car, and its production run reflected that. Exorbitantly expensive, and unable to continue production in line with updated emissions standards, only 1,510 units of the model were produced the world over. And to add enthusiast clout to such rarity, each of these cars came fitted with a six-speed transmission bolted to the back of a 5.6-liter V12 stamped with the fastest letter in the alphabet. The 380-horsepower heart that resides under the hood of Patterson’s—and every—CSi has an interesting family history, and can claim to this day its title as the rarest production engine in a BMW road car. In a reversal of the typical German logic, BMW’s M-tuned and -built motors will often trade their “M” designation for that of an “S.” Such is the case with the S70B56 found in the CSi. Variations of this motor—which was essentially a pair of straight-sixes fused together—would go on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright, in both the McLaren F1 GTR, and in BMW’s own V12 LMR. [17:10] Too often the 8-Series is categorized in that group consisting of once-expensive luxury cars that are now prohibitively costly to maintain, and so are left to wallow, undriven. Sure, it checks a lot of those boxes (the V12 E31s have an ECU per half-dozen pistons, which is just a piece of the massive amount of interconnected systems in this car that required the creation of a bespoke network to operate), but somehow it just doesn’t belong in the dealer lots full of S-Classes with all their trick bits already broken. Perhaps the 840Ci automatic that’s been given a hard life is beyond the rational point of saving, but cars like Taylor’s immaculately displayed CSi prove that the time when these cars become “dated” is still a long ways off yet. It’s understandable that one can look at something like the 850CSi and mistakenly view it as a compromise between two worlds, as an object somewhere on the muddled boundary between the disciplines of Motorsport and luxuriant indulgence. Of course it lives at such a meeting point, but the very fact that it does bring together these disparate worlds into a coherent package is the evidence that the last thing at play in a car like this is compromise. Revisiting what made the first E31 a high watermark for the burgeoning world of luxury GTs in the 1990s makes us supremely excited for the modern interpretation of the flagship Ultimate Driving Machine, but no matter what comes next, the 850CSi will always be significant for what it stands for, and how good it looks doing so.
