    • Polestar started as a racing team, then they decided to have a go at tuning Volvos to make them a bit more exciting. Then Geely, which owns Volvo, bought Polestar and decided it should become its own brand, making electric cars. The first car from Polestar is called, helpfully, the 1. What it isn't, is an EV, it's actually a hybrid coupe with 600PS from a 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, and 1,000Nm of torque. While it looks the business and its tech specs cannot be denied (it has fully manually adjustable dampers, all-wheel-drive, incredible electric-hybrid tech), it also costs £139,000 and they only made a handful of Polestar 1s.   • 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 R
    • Porsche has designed a new customer racer for GT3 series worldwide for 2019 based on the 911 GT3 RS production sports car: the 911 GT3 R. During the development of the up to 404 kW (550 hp)* racing nine-eleven, special attention was paid to particularly efficient aerodynamics, further optimised safety as well as lowering the cost of servicing and spare parts. The lightweight body design of the 911 GT3 RS production sports car featuring intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction has proven to be the ideal basis for the near-production race car. The roof, front hood and fairing, wheel arches, doors, side and tail sections as well as the rear lid and interior trim are made of particularly light carbon-fibre composite material (CFRP). All windows consist of polycarbonate. Powering the new 911 GT3 R is a cutting-edge four-litre flat-six unit which is largely identical to the high-performance production engine of the road-legal 911 GT3 RS. Direct fuel injection, which operates at pressures up to 200 bar, as well as variable valve timing adjustments of the intake and exhaust camshafts ensure a particularly efficient use of fuel. Moreover, compared to its predecessor, the normally-aspirated engine offers significantly better driveability and a broader usable rev range. The engine response is more precise due to six throttle butterflies. Power from the rear engine is transferred to the 310-mm-wide rear wheels via a Porsche sequential six-speed constant-mesh gearbox with an electronic shift actuator for particularly fast and precise gear changes. As in the GT road-going models, the driver changes gears via shift paddles conveniently positioned on the steering wheel. The clutch is electro-hydraulically controlled, which eliminates the need for the clutch pedal and assists quick race starts. Typical of the 911, the weight distribution ensures excellent traction and braking performances. The spectacular aerodynamics of the 911 GT3 R also follows the example of the road car. The distinctive wheel arch air vents on the front fairings increase downforce at the front axle. Measuring 1,900 millimetres in width by 400 millimetres in depth, the rear wing lends aerodynamic balance. The tyre circumference at the front axle has grown from 650 to 680 millimetres. In tandem with the new Porsche double wishbone suspension, this ensures superior braking performances and consistency over the duration of the race. The brake system of the 911 GT3 R also underwent further modifications and now offers increased stiffness and more precise control of the ABS. At the front axle, six-piston aluminium monobloc racing brake callipers combined with ventilated and grooved steel brake discs with a diameter of 390 millimetres ensure outstanding braking performances. Fitted at the rear axle are four-piston callipers and discs measuring 370 millimetres. Another development focus was on the safety features of the 911 GT3 R. In order to improve pit stop performance, the 120-litre FT3 safety fuel cell can now be refilled from the left or the right depending on the circuit layout. The doors and the side windows can be removed. The new racing bucket seat affords pilots even better protection in the event of a collision. The seats are now bolted at six points. In combination with the adjustable pedal box, the driver’s centre of gravity is optimised and offers increased safety in the event of an impact. In addition, the driver is protected thanks to a side impact element positioned in the driver’s door, which consists of a carbon-fibre Kevlar aluminium construction with energy-absorbing plastic foam. The cockpit has been redesigned. All controls have been perfectly aligned to suit the needs of the driver. For the first time the 911 GT3 R features air-conditioning. This ensures ideal interior cooling and, thanks to the direct connection to the seat and driver’s helmet, enables particularly efficient cooling of the driver, which in turn helps them maintain concentration and a constant performance over the race. From the start of the 2021 season, this racer will be campaigned in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup as well as the national Porsche Carrera Cups in Germany, France, Asia and Benelux and for the first time in North America. The spectacularly styled Cup car is the first racing version based on the current 992 generation and the first makes-cup racer of the sports car manufacturer to feature a wide turbo-spec body. Producing around 375 kW (510 hp), it exceeds the output of its immediate predecessor by 25 horsepower. Moreover, the new GT3 Cup can run on synthetic fuels, which significantly lowers CO2 emissions under racing conditions. A race-winner from his early teens, Bruce McLaren soon moved through the tiers into Formula Two, before travelling to the UK in 1958 as part of New Zealand’s ‘Driver to Europe’ scheme to expose young talent to championship-winning teams. McLaren’s racing career saw him notch up no fewer than 27 podiums and four outright wins in the Formula One World Championship. Not only that, but in 1966 he and co-driver Chris Amon won the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving a Ford GT40 Mk II. McLaren would also go on to dominate Can-Am racing at the end of that decade. In the late 1960s, in between storming to victory in the Can-Am Challenge Cup, Bruce was developing a prototype for the first McLaren-branded road car. A logical step in the program of creating a competitor for Le Mans; it was envisaged as a homologation car for FIA Group 4 racing. The car would feature a 370bhp 5.7-litre V8, while its lightweight aluminium monocoque construction meant it tipped the scale as just 725kg. Ultimately, the project would be disrupted by McLaren’s untimely death in 1970, and another McLaren road car would not be conceived until the late 1980s. The now-legendary McLaren F1 was revealed to the world in Monaco in May 1992, just a few days before Ayrton Senna would take victory in that year’s Monaco Grand Prix behind the wheel of the McLaren MP4/7A. Using an innovative carbon composite chassis and bodywork, the F1 was remarkably light, incredibly well-packaged, and boasted a 6.1-litre naturally aspirated V12 producing 627hp. The combination of its power, low weight and stability, enabled the F1 to achieve a top speed of 240.1mph at the famous Ehra-Lessien proving ground in Germany in 1998, setting a new record as the world’s fastest production car. The F1 is retroactively considered the first car in McLaren’s ‘Ultimate Series’, with the second being the P1 that was revealed in 2012. The P1 featured an incredible hybrid powertrain, with a maximum of 903bhp and 664lb-ft of torque via a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 combined with an electric motor. Just 375 customer road cars were built, as well as a limited number of track-only GTRs and a handful of P1 LMs. While not a direct successor to either the F1 or the P1, the McLaren Senna is the third car in the series. Even the standard road car was conceived and developed to deliver remarkable lap times on track, with its bodywork featuring aggressive aero-optimised elements, and with power coming from a mighty twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8. Just under a year following the launch of the road-going model, McLaren unveiled the Senna GTR. Sitting 34mm lower to the ground, it was also equipped with a dramatic front splitter, vast rear wing, revised diffuser, and front ‘canards’. It tipped the scales at just 1188kg dry, boasted an additional 200kg of downforce at 155mph, and its suspension was swapped to the lightweight racing setup from the 720S GT3 race car. At the heart of the Senna GTR, the hugely powerful twin-turbocharged V8 was revised to produce up to 825hp and 800Nm of torque, driven through the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch race transmission with paddle shifters. Thanks to Balance of Performance (BOP) rules, the Cadillac's 5.5-liter cross plane-crank, 8800-rpm V-8 is limited in output thanks to a restrictor plate — and its electric hybrid motor is also turned down. But there are no BOP rules on the road, so the Cadillac team turned the wick all the way up. Meanwhile, the road cars were vying for a chance to race the Cadillac. The Ferrari 296 GTB with Assetto Fiorano (sport) package comes with Michelin Pilot Cup 2R tires to deal with the 818 hp from its twin-turbo, 120º 3-liter V-6 and electric motors. The McLaren 720S uses a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter flat-plane-crank V8. And the rear-engined Porsche 911 sends its 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six's power to all four wheels, with a blazing launch that'll keep up with a 1500-hp Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport to 60 mph. But can any of them keep up with a Le Mans car? And what about in a rolling race from the Cadillac's 60-kph pit-speed limiter?
