    • If you thought Lamborghini’s first attempt at an SUV was a bit slow and underpowered, we have good news. Lambo has updated the Urus with more power, more carbon and a proper Rally mode. So, ladies and gents, say hello to the new and improved Lamborghini Urus Performante. Want some numbers? Well, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 has had its wick turned up. Power increases by 16bhp to 657bhp, with torque remaining at 627lb ft but the 0–62mph time dropping to 3.3 seconds. It’s also lost 47kg, but this is still a 2,150kg SUV. There’s a lot more going on than that though. Including breaking the record for the fastest SUV to complete the famous Pikes Peak hill climb.   • Lancia 037 Group B Represents Last Era of Racing Romance
    • Imagine yourself in Lancia’s position in the early 1980s. Your Stratos has recently won three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974-76) but you can see the writing on the wall, writing which reads “all-wheel-drive.” How do you build on this past success and continue to be competitive in the new decade? For Lancia, the answer was the 037, which would ultimately become, in 1983, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the WRC Manufacturers' Championship before AWD competitors like the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16 completely changed the sport forever. To compete in Group B events, Lancia was obliged to meet homologation rules by producing 200 street versions of the 037. While visually striking and invigorating to drive, the 037 Stradale remains, at heart, a race car and is thus anything but comfortable. This, however, is precisely what appeals to owner Philip Toledano, who grew up watching Lancia–more specifically, the Stratos and 037–dominate European rally racing. “It’s not like [the 037] was just a sports car designed for people who wanted to go fast,” says Phil. “This was designed for a purpose, and I love things that were designed specifically for a purpose, like a tool–except it's a fast tool that scares the crap out of you.” The interior of the 037 Stradale belies the car’s racing heritage: the dash contains a circuit board, conveniently located for periodic resets by the navigator; a navigator’s light stands at the ready; and the oil temperature gauge is located on the far right side of the dash, in front of the navigator’s seat. The 037's exterior is similarly eye-catching. Sporting a Pininfarina body and a 2.0 liter, supercharged Abarth engine that, as Phil puts it, makes Star Wars-like noises as he revs through the gears, the car attracts onlookers wherever it goes. Usually, however, this 037 is but a screaming red blur, leaving those onlookers little time to realize what they’ve just seen.   • 1967 Marcos 1600 GT
    • In 1964, Marcos introduced a very attractive two-seater coupe which is still being produced in modern times. Little changed from the initial design and it has proved to be a timeless and alluring creation. These coupes were created in an unusual fashion, using laminated plywood for the chassis construction. GRP was used for the outer body panels. The front seats were mounted to the rear bulkhead which meant they could not be moved. To accommodate the different sizes of passengers, the foot pedals could be adjusted to the correct length. A small wheel located under the dash made the process a little less cumbersome, though highly unusual. The 1600 was powered by a Ford Cortina MK II GT engine which was capable of carrying the car to a top speed of around 115 mph. This was a vast improvement over the prior version of the car, the 1500. Zero-to-sixty for the 1600 was in the 11 second range. Marcos was founded in Luton, in Bedfordshire, England, in 1959 by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. Frank Costin had earlier worked on the De Havilland Mosquito fighter-bombers and from there he got the idea to use plywood for the chassis. The company moved to a converted mill in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire in 1963 and in 1971 to a £125,000 purpose built factory at nearby Westbury. Problems with exporting cars to the USA and the move to the expensive new premises led to financial troubles in the 1970s and by 1971 they were out of business. In July 1971 it was reported that the Rob Walker Group of Companies, a principal dealer, had taken over the stocks and assets of the business and established a new company, Marcos Ltd. The new owners insisted that production would continue, albeit, at least in the short term, only for the UK market. Marcos dealers in the UK had been heavily discounting new cars since the end of 1970, however, while a report at the time of the collapse stated that the company's stock of 35 unsold cars in the USA had had to be "liquidated":[1] in reality there seems to have been a substantial stock of new cars still looking for buyers, and it is not clear whether, over the next few years, any more were built. Just a year later, one Saturday in June 1972, what was described as "a cash jumble sale of Marcos bits - prototype and shop soiled components, benches, tools..." took place at what was could now be characterized as the "old Marcos Cars factory" at Westbury.[2] The sale was occasioned by the company's reorganization and move to a smaller factory. Jem Marsh however stayed in the auto business. In 1976 he bought back the rights to the Marcos name, and in 1981 the Marcos was re-launched with the Marcos V6 Coupe that was sold in kit form. Marcos went bankrupt again in 2000, but thanks to a wealthy Canadian, Tony Stelliga buying the company, production was again revived in 2002. The race car production was relocated to the Netherlands while road car production moved to Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England. By 2005 most of the designers from the near to bankrupt TVR joined the company. On 9 October 2007 it was announced that Marcos would cease car production and go into voluntary liquidation. The first car, the 1960 Marcos GT, was rather strange looking with gullwing doors and a windscreen in four panels. For production the body was made less radical but initially retained the gullwing doors. It was powered by a choice of Ford engines varying from 997 cc to 1498 cc and had Standard 10 and Triumph Herald steering and suspension components. Thirty nine were made up to 1963. In 1961 the brothers Dennis Adams and Peter Adams started working with Marcos and they introduced a number of changes to the original design, so the Marcos Luton Gullwing, and the Spyder were introduced in November 1961, immediately transformed to the Marcos Fastback GT , was displayed at the London Racing Car Show in 1963. The chassis were glued of mainly 3 mm thin sheets of marine plywood, giving the cars a very strong monocoque and unbeatable low total weight (internationally homologated with 475 kg), resulting in a great performance in sportscar competition. Totally 39 cars were produced of these early Marcos models and nearly all of them were used for national and international racing purpose.

    • In 2010, Bentley replaced its flagship vehicle, the Arnage, with the Mulsanne. A limousine that only sells a few hundred units every year in Europe, but compared to its direct competitors, its the most popular. This is the 2017 Mulsanne Speed, a label which signifies extra power and more styling than the standard Mulsanne costing just over a quarter of a million pounds. This model we tested with a few added options, would cost a staggering £300,000. So, you could say this is a limousine reserved for the super-rich and super-famous, the Bentley Mulsanne is exactly what you would expect from such a vehicle, and albeit updated for 2017, the Mulsanne still holds on to its heritage and the performance Bentley is famous for. From the drivers prospective, well, as you can expect, it’s a very exciting place to be. Under this massive bonnet, is a 6.7 litre V8 delivering a massive 530hp and 1100 nm of torque making it the most powerful production 4 door car in the world. Just yesterday I completed a 150 mile journey and returned a whopping 25.2 mpg! That's just 4 less than my diesel Landcover! Inside the cabin the optional liquid Amber Veneer, deep pile Wilton carpets and soft Alcantara headrests gives any client the ultimate VIP treatment. Although this is the standard wheelbase model, there’s plenty of legroom. The latest updates includes this redesigned multimedia interface - now featuring a wider touch screen, results into a much more intuitive system. Sofa like rear seats offer an extremely generous recline helping the client sit way back behind the C-Pillar for privacy aided by powered window blinds. Seating is far more comfortable compared to the likes of the Rolls-Royce Ghost in which rear seats seem more bench like. As you can expect, the rear seats of the Mulsanne are an incredible place to be and there’s certainly every effort made to make the client aware they’re in the back of one of the world’s most luxurious limousines. When you take a glance at the options added to this car, you soon realise its not for penny pinchers - these 10 inch electronic tablets with Google Maps and veneered picnic tables are a mere £15,500 whilst these rather dull cushions and massage for all 4 seats will cost another four grand. When you get to this level of vehicle, it’s all a matter of taste as affordability just isn’t something that’s considered. However, if cost is a factor than consider a Mercedes S-Class Maybach which can be a cool £80,000 cheaper than the Mulsanne or a Rolls-Royce Ghost which costs around £220,000. But for me, the Bentley has the handmade, personal touch, and oozes class and elegance, and results in a car that really makes it stand out from the other super limos. Each car takes nine to twelve weeks to produce, the engine alone takes 30 hours to build. EWB version is around £275,000.

La nuova sfida è testimoniata a Trento dalla presenza di Stéphane Peterhansel, 14 volte vincitore della Dakar, che per la prima volta incontra il pubblico nella nuova veste di pilota Audi. ‘Mr Dakar’ farà parte degli equipaggi Audi che parteciperanno al prossimo rally raid con l’innovativo prototipo elettrico Audi RS Q e-tron presentato in anteprima per l’Italia. Dakar è la coerente sintesi dei due mondi che rappresentano i pilastri nella storia sportiva del Brand: l’endurance e i rally. Se Audi è stata la prima Casa automobilistica a vincere la 24 Ore di Le Mans con un modello a propulsione ibrida, il successo nel rally ha decretato la straordinaria efficacia della tecnologia integrale quattro. Oggi la trazione integrale è una tecnologia condivisa sia dalle vetture da competizione sia dalle vetture di serie convenzionali, ibride plug-in ed elettriche dei quattro anelli. Schierandosi al via della Dakar, una delle ultime grandi sfide motoristiche e ingegneristiche al mondo, Audi attinge ad ampio spettro al proprio know-how sportivo e resta fedele alla propria filosofia di sviluppare nelle competizioni le tecnologie più innovative da trasferire alle future vetture di serie. Audi RS Q e-tron è dotata di tre powertrain derivati dalla monoposto Audi e-tron FE07 di Formula E: due MGU (Motor Generator Unit), una in corrispondenza di ciascun assale, si occupano della trazione, mentre una terza unità agisce quale generatore per contribuire alla ricarica della batteria ad alto voltaggio, specie in frenata. Non essendo possibile attingere energia nel deserto, Audi ha optato per una soluzione on board: l’accumulatore viene rifornito durante la marcia grazie all’azione di un range extender. Funzione, quest’ultima, affidata al performante quattro cilindri TFSI – turbo a iniezione diretta della benzina – derivato dal DTM, il Campionato Tedesco Turismo. Determinazione e costante ricerca di soluzioni innovative testimoniata dal claim “All’Avanguardia della tecnica”, fanno sì che nell’impegno nel rally raid estremo vengano testate tecnologie che poi sono destinate alle vetture stradali, come successo per le vetture ibride plug-in Audi A6 e Audi Q7 TFSI, che accompagneranno gli atleti della Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali nei loro spostamenti durante la stagione che sta per iniziare. La flotta dedicata agli azzurri può contare su due “cuori”: il propulsore termico V6 3.0 TFSI, turbo a iniezione diretta della benzina da 340 CV, e il motore elettrico sincrono a magneti permanenti. Una soluzione di mobilità che garantisce performance e sicurezza assieme ai vantaggi in termini di mobilità, fiscalità e semplicità di fruizione.

  • This 1973 Porsche 2.7 Carrera RS Is a Race Car for the Street
    • In the early 1970s, Porsche found itself in need of a street car that would allow the fellows in Stuttgart to meet homologation rules for the Group 4 Special GT series. What resulted was the 1973 2.7 Carrera RS, a brawny brother to the 911. With its ducktail rear spoiler, big brakes, and flared rear fenders, the car was an instant classic. Indeed, the car was so popular that Porsche opted to go well beyond the 500-car minimum required for homologation, ultimately producing more than 1500 of the Carrera RS model in 1973. Over the past 40 years, the Carrera RS has earned a reputation as the greatest dual-purpose Porsche ever produced, the very essence of balanced quickness. In 1973, however, owing to some killjoys' concerns about bumpers and emissions and excess glee, the RS was not certified for importation into the United States. And yet, somehow, four of these cars snuck across the border into the US. One of them, serial number 1309, ended up in the hands of famed race car driver and Porsche distributor Vasek Polek. Number 1309 now makes its home with Mr. Mark Haddawy, who seldom misses a chance to sling it through the canyons near his home in Los Angeles, California. As Mark points out, the RS, despite being a 40-year-old car, still holds its own against its modern streetmates. After all, even by today's standards, the RS is fast: it covers zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and sports a top speed of 150 mph. The mystique of the 2.7 RS, however, goes beyond sheer statistics and, at times, can defy description. "I've driven a lot of different sports cars," says Mark. "There's something about the RS that's magical. It's definitely more than the sum of all of its parts." For now, then, we'll just call the RS what it is: a race car for the street.   • Homologation Specials: 1990 BMW E30 M3 Sport Evolution
    • In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the best touring car racing in the world was happening in Germany. The Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) was a hotbed for manufacturer money and talented drivers, the racing was at its door-banging finest, and the pursuit of competitive edges on the track produced some of the most iconic homologation specials for the road. The most famous of which was the first-ever BMW M3. Based on the E30-generation 3-Series, the M3 was comprehensively reworked by the engineers at BMW Motorsport to battle it out with Ford, Audi, and most of all the Bavarian’s opposition from Stuttgart, Mercedes-Benz. Although no single manufacturer can be said to have dominated the DTM during this period, the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz 190E were consistent favorites, and the definitive rivals of the series that duked it out for the better part of a decade, each winning titles over the efforts of the other. Both the Benz and the Bimmer were treated to Evolution models over the course of their careers, and in 1990 the two carmakers arrived with their last major iterations, the winged 190E Evolution II, and the BMW Sport Evolution. In this week’s film, our host Alain de Cadenet takes the road-going version of the ultimate E30 M3 on a drive in the mountains of Portugal, exploring its development history while putting it to work on the types of roads cars like this were all but built for.
