  • 1967 Marcos 1600 GT
    • In 1964, Marcos introduced a very attractive two-seater coupe which is still being produced in modern times. Little changed from the initial design and it has proved to be a timeless and alluring creation. These coupes were created in an unusual fashion, using laminated plywood for the chassis construction. GRP was used for the outer body panels. The front seats were mounted to the rear bulkhead which meant they could not be moved. To accommodate the different sizes of passengers, the foot pedals could be adjusted to the correct length. A small wheel located under the dash made the process a little less cumbersome, though highly unusual. The 1600 was powered by a Ford Cortina MK II GT engine which was capable of carrying the car to a top speed of around 115 mph. This was a vast improvement over the prior version of the car, the 1500. Zero-to-sixty for the 1600 was in the 11 second range. Marcos was founded in Luton, in Bedfordshire, England, in 1959 by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. Frank Costin had earlier worked on the De Havilland Mosquito fighter-bombers and from there he got the idea to use plywood for the chassis. The company moved to a converted mill in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire in 1963 and in 1971 to a £125,000 purpose built factory at nearby Westbury. Problems with exporting cars to the USA and the move to the expensive new premises led to financial troubles in the 1970s and by 1971 they were out of business. In July 1971 it was reported that the Rob Walker Group of Companies, a principal dealer, had taken over the stocks and assets of the business and established a new company, Marcos Ltd. The new owners insisted that production would continue, albeit, at least in the short term, only for the UK market. Marcos dealers in the UK had been heavily discounting new cars since the end of 1970, however, while a report at the time of the collapse stated that the company's stock of 35 unsold cars in the USA had had to be "liquidated":[1] in reality there seems to have been a substantial stock of new cars still looking for buyers, and it is not clear whether, over the next few years, any more were built. Just a year later, one Saturday in June 1972, what was described as "a cash jumble sale of Marcos bits - prototype and shop soiled components, benches, tools..." took place at what was could now be characterized as the "old Marcos Cars factory" at Westbury.[2] The sale was occasioned by the company's reorganization and move to a smaller factory. Jem Marsh however stayed in the auto business. In 1976 he bought back the rights to the Marcos name, and in 1981 the Marcos was re-launched with the Marcos V6 Coupe that was sold in kit form. Marcos went bankrupt again in 2000, but thanks to a wealthy Canadian, Tony Stelliga buying the company, production was again revived in 2002. The race car production was relocated to the Netherlands while road car production moved to Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England. By 2005 most of the designers from the near to bankrupt TVR joined the company. On 9 October 2007 it was announced that Marcos would cease car production and go into voluntary liquidation. The first car, the 1960 Marcos GT, was rather strange looking with gullwing doors and a windscreen in four panels. For production the body was made less radical but initially retained the gullwing doors. It was powered by a choice of Ford engines varying from 997 cc to 1498 cc and had Standard 10 and Triumph Herald steering and suspension components. Thirty nine were made up to 1963. In 1961 the brothers Dennis Adams and Peter Adams started working with Marcos and they introduced a number of changes to the original design, so the Marcos Luton Gullwing, and the Spyder were introduced in November 1961, immediately transformed to the Marcos Fastback GT , was displayed at the London Racing Car Show in 1963. The chassis were glued of mainly 3 mm thin sheets of marine plywood, giving the cars a very strong monocoque and unbeatable low total weight (internationally homologated with 475 kg), resulting in a great performance in sportscar competition. Totally 39 cars were produced of these early Marcos models and nearly all of them were used for national and international racing purpose.

  • Lancia 037 Group B Represents Last Era of Racing Romance
    • Imagine yourself in Lancia’s position in the early 1980s. Your Stratos has recently won three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974-76) but you can see the writing on the wall, writing which reads “all-wheel-drive.” How do you build on this past success and continue to be competitive in the new decade? For Lancia, the answer was the 037, which would ultimately become, in 1983, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the WRC Manufacturers' Championship before AWD competitors like the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16 completely changed the sport forever. To compete in Group B events, Lancia was obliged to meet homologation rules by producing 200 street versions of the 037. While visually striking and invigorating to drive, the 037 Stradale remains, at heart, a race car and is thus anything but comfortable. This, however, is precisely what appeals to owner Philip Toledano, who grew up watching Lancia–more specifically, the Stratos and 037–dominate European rally racing. “It’s not like [the 037] was just a sports car designed for people who wanted to go fast,” says Phil. “This was designed for a purpose, and I love things that were designed specifically for a purpose, like a tool–except it's a fast tool that scares the crap out of you.” The interior of the 037 Stradale belies the car’s racing heritage: the dash contains a circuit board, conveniently located for periodic resets by the navigator; a navigator’s light stands at the ready; and the oil temperature gauge is located on the far right side of the dash, in front of the navigator’s seat. The 037's exterior is similarly eye-catching. Sporting a Pininfarina body and a 2.0 liter, supercharged Abarth engine that, as Phil puts it, makes Star Wars-like noises as he revs through the gears, the car attracts onlookers wherever it goes. Usually, however, this 037 is but a screaming red blur, leaving those onlookers little time to realize what they’ve just seen. But is this the best car I drove around Fiorano Circuit during my time there?! Welcome to the Ferrari 296 Challenge – the firm's latest customer race car that differentiates itself from the previous V8-engined 488 Challenge with a trick new twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 engine, offering up an impressive 690bhp and 545lb ft of torque. Ditching the 296 road car's hybrid system and relying instead on good old fashioned internal combustion grunt, the 296 Challenge doesn't have the heft you may expect from a modern car, making it one hell of an enticing prospect on paper. But how does all this translate into spirited driving around this iconic race track?     • If you thought Lamborghini’s first attempt at an SUV was a bit slow and underpowered, we have good news. Lambo has updated the Urus with more power, more carbon and a proper Rally mode. So, ladies and gents, say hello to the new and improved Lamborghini Urus Performante. Want some numbers? Well, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 has had its wick turned up. Power increases by 16bhp to 657bhp, with torque remaining at 627lb ft but the 0–62mph time dropping to 3.3 seconds. It’s also lost 47kg, but this is still a 2,150kg SUV. There’s a lot more going on than that though. Including breaking the record for the fastest SUV to complete the famous Pikes Peak hill climb. I had the opportunity to explore the private garage featuring some of the rarest models like the LaFerrari, SA Aperta and Koenig 512 BB, as well as the cars being joined by some incredible Ferrari memorabilia, all presented like it's a museum - but belonging to one individual collector. With huge thanks to the owner, we can look through in detail at the 12 cars on display in the collection including a Schumacher Formula 1 car, 512 BB Koenig, F355 Fiorano Edition, 550 Barchetta, 512M, 599 GTO, LaFerrari, SA Aperta, 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia 16M, a tailor-made California T and an earlier Lusso. Alongside the cars though are some unique Ferrari pieces from a life-size red horse to a Ferrari logo chandelier with unlimited model cars in between. What you are seeing is just part of the full collection, it extends in total to 40 Ferraris that are stored around the world. However, as a way to store and diplays such special Ferrari cars, it couldn't really get much better! Motor Trend reported the lap time results at race track and the Corvette's time beat the new Viper.   • Dallara Stradale Tiff Needell - Road and Track Test

Unless you're a die-hard motorsport fan, you might think that Dallara is the latest in the line of low-volume boutique sports car manufacturers. But there's a lot more to this Italian mark than meets the eye! Tiff Needell takes a look at the man and the brand, Gian Paolo Dallara, an engineer, who worked for the likes of Ferrari, and Maserati and Lamborghini. In 1972 set up his own company and actually made his very first little racing car, but he soon got distracted by manufacturers who wanted him to engineer and build their racing cars, and he created this Group VI Lancia LC1 sports car and went on to create Lancia's LC2 Group C car. Dallara also built Ferrari's 333 SP sports car, and Audi's Le Mans-winning R8. But Dallara's talents weren't just confined to sports cars. He built the Scuderia Italian Grand Prix car that took two podium finishes in the late 80s, early 90s. He built cars that won the Indianapolis 500. He now builds all the Indy cars, he builds all the Formula 2 cars, all the Formula 3 cars, also build the Haas Grand Prix cars, and he's even involved in Formula E. With 770HP and 720NM of torque, it was a Nurburgring lap record holder when first released. The 6.5L, naturally aspirated V12 engine gives the car a 0-62MPH time of just 2.8 seconds, going onto a top speed of 217MPH! Those numbers are only half the story though, with biblical sound from that screaming V12 and immense aerodynamics. The Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva, or ALA, helps push air over the car and keeps the Lamborghini glued to the ground. There's three different modes, Strada, Sport and Corsa, that changes the personality on the SVJ depending on what the driver chooses.   • Porsche 991.2 GT3 R (GT3 Class) w/ Unmuffled Exhaust: Pure 4.0 N/A Flat-6 Sound!
    • I think I've never explicitly said it but unconsciously there has always been a small desire to be able to hear one of the GT3-class Porsches with a fully unmuffled exhaust. The opportunity happened last weekend at Mugello Circuit during the 2021 12h of Mugello race organized by Creventic as the first of two Italian rounds of their 24h Series. Typically the upgraded 991 Mk2 (991.2) version of the "R" comes with a visible muffler on the rear of the car, but despite that it still manages to be one of the most melodic sounding cars in the GT3 class and it's also loud enough for my liking. But thanks to Herberth Motorsport team, one of their 991.2 GT3s was fitted with that straight exhaust during the whole racing weekend. And it sounds ridiculous compared to the already loud standard R's. Of course in this form the 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-6 engine could only have echoes of the beloved GTE-class 991 RSR 2017. But even if sometimes tones and notes are exactly the same, the RSR still keeps the ''loudest race car'' trophy among them. Two little things I need to explain to avoid some 'wtf moments', kinda of: 1) The Herberth's Porsches featuring the unmuffled exhaust is always just one on track, but there are two different ones in this video (in particular starting from the second half, when the 'Pit In / Pit Exit' chapter starts at around 8 minutes mark). Herberth Motorsport fielded two 991 GT3s, number 91 with red LED running lights and number 92 with yellow LEDs. During the official part of the event (Friday's free practices, qualifying and Saturday's race) number 91 was fitted with the straight piped exhaust while 92 with the 'OEM' muffled one, as you can see from the very beginning of the video. But in the second half of the video you can also see clips of the 92 with the unmuffled exhaust. That's because during Thursday's unofficial tests Herberth Motorsport mounted this exhaust on the 92 for the morning part of the tests. I managed to get some good clean scenes so it seemed logical to me to use them. 2) Why the cold start up on the grid an not in the garage before the outlap. I've only attended just two of Creventic's racing weekends and both were at Mugello (2019 and 2021) and in the exact same period of the year (late March), but I saw from their live streams that sometimes the format of other championship's rounds is the same. Basically the 12 hours competition is divided into two parts: a first 4 hours on Friday and the remaining 8 on Saturday. At the end of the first part, cars are parked in order of classifications on the grid (in this way split times of competitors in the same lap are 'technically' deleted but lapped cars remains lapped of the same number of laps when the first part of the race ended). The grid becomes a sort of closed park and the cars remain there for the night. 45 minutes before the start of the second part, the 'closed park' status ends and mechanics can go to their cars to do a very limited number of things such as warming up the engine, cleaning the windshield and check if there aren't any dangerous moving parts or broken pieces. Such a shame I didn't manage to do do many of my typical endless sound scenes since track was really packed therefore other cars often arrived in the clip when I was still trying to record the GT3 R echoing in the distance. But as you can hear, the car was the loudest on track.
